I was preparing to make corn bread. And in my pantry I had this can of what I thought was cream style corn that I might just try to throw in with the bread recipe. EnglishWith the nights finally cooling down, and the air quality being acceptable for most of this year, I started sleeping with an open window recently – instead of using the A/C. But the other night I got quite the scare. Right outside my window is a roof that’s made up of glass tiles. And one of the tiles right in front of my window decided to burst into thousands of shards in the middle of the night. Things sounded like they were exploding, and then I could hear the rain of glass shards. Needless to say, there wasn’t much sleep for me afterwards. Glass splinters even dropped all the way on my window sill, even though my window was open just a small crack. I’m just glad it wasn’t anything more than just a glass tile that burst. EnglishThis year I’ve noticed a big improvement in the air quality. Now, I can’t decide whether that has more to do with how many businesses shut down because of Covid restrictions, or with actually working on making the air better. But whatever it is, we’ve been having a lot more blue sky days this year than in all previous years. The improvement is so notable that I’ve even started to open my window – not just on rainy days (when the air gets “showered” by the rain, and the dust gets washed away), but on any day. EnglishWhile elsewhere in the world people do everything to save on plastic, I can’t say the same is true for where we live here. More and more restaurants are turning away from porcelain dishes, and toward plastic. And it makes me wonder: What use is it when one part of the world is going out of their way to reduce plastic trash, when in other parts of the world, more plastic is being demanded? EnglishThe foreign residence has a tiny little courtyard with playground and a patio. And to said patio I was invited by my friend for a nice little dinner together. EnglishThis week was my birthday, and it seemed there was no end to celebrations. I ended up having three different cakes (all well shared with friends), and parties several nights in a row. EnglishIt’s strawberry season, and needless to say, I’m piling up the sweet fruit for days when strawberries are out of season. EnglishGetting meals in the dining hall of the foreign faculty building used to be part of our salary. Until we finally got the school to relent, up our salary, and give us the choice where and how we wanted to eat. Ever since then, going to the dining hall has become a rare thing for me. But for Thanksgiving I was back in the dining hall, because that’s one of the meals the school invites all its foreign faculty to. So, we feasted to our hearts desires all the things the kitchen staff (and some of our colleagues) have been busy to whip up for us.
