On the Road Again

Guess what! This weekend one of my friends is getting married, and for me that means getting ready for another trip. It also means that I’ll be heading out some time this afternoon and I’ll be spending the night on a train. That in turn means it’s something I’m not quite looking forward to. Trains and nights and me don’t usually match well together, which also means that I’m about to experience a very tiring weekend. But at least it’s a wedding, and I’ll get to see one of my friends again, whom I haven’t seen in a long time. That counts for something, doesn’t it?

The Lives of Batteries

Have I ever told you about batteries? Of course, we don’t need to discuss their usefulness here, as everyone knows that life is hardly possible without them in this day and age. That, however, doesn’t mean that that makes their life possibly lasting longer. Not at all. And surely not here where I live. In fact, the life expectancy of batteries are just as unreliable as you could imagine. Let me give you a recent example: I was buying an appliance that works with the help of batteries. And on the box of that appliance it tells you clearly that with proper use, a battery will last two years before it needs to be switched out. Well, did I think when I bought that appliance, make that a couple of months instead, and then we’re getting closer to reality. Little did I know that I was wrong. Dead wrong. For it didn’t take two years; neither did it take a couple of months. Within one month after I’d bought the appliance, it stopped working because …

On Little Heater Friends, Big Heater Friends and a Very Cozy Home

Something dreadful has happened to me! My friend, Little Heater, who used to be indispensable for me during winter in the last couple of years has abandoned me. Just like that! No, it didn’t give up its spirits, or just quit its services. It just flat out abandoned me! First, it went off to serve one of my friends in his bathroom – quitting its social sphere of the heater community and turning into a dryer – can you imagine that degradation? (And yes, our building still has issues and needs constant maintenance. My friend’s apartment, for example, had gotten flooded right before he wanted to move in, and after months it still needs help drying up.) And now, Little Heater has gone off to be with one of my other friends who complained about having to give exams in freezing classrooms the other day. So Little Heater decided to take up heating business again and stay with my friend for a while! Well, maybe I shouldn’t be too upset with Little Heater. Maybe it’s …

Oh, the Drama with the Christmas Cards

Guess what? I fear the very worst has happened. Do you remember how I sent a bunch of Christmas to my friends and family early in December? I did it really early this time, really wanting to make sure they’d arrive in time. But as I’m sure you’re able to guess now – the very worst has happened. They haven’t arrived at all yet. And I don’t need to tell you that we’re way past Christmas! Maybe the ribbons and all that were too much of a threat!

An Overdose of Fruit

You see, the thing with visiting people around here is that you’re always expected to bring presents. Usually, I’ve trained my students well, and despite their cultural background, they don’t bring something for me each time they visit me. These days, however, they found out that I’ve been sick. And when they came to visit me, every one of them brought a full bag of fruit – apples, pears, pomelo (2x), bananas (x2). And now I’m left to wonder: how am I ever going to eat all of it? It seems impossible, even when I’m healthy!

Feeling Sick

After a weekend full of people, that is, full of hanging out with people, things have changed a little this week. I’ve been feeling rather sick. Not because of the people I hung out with, really. But because some of these people were sick. Now they’re well, and a whole bunch of us others started feeling sick this week. I for one. And so my new year’s week has been basically all about my bed and some movie watching. Not quite the exciting way of starting the new year, is it?

New Meal Schedule

When it comes to meals and holidays, there’s a slight dilemma. You see, we get our meals served three times a day, buffet style. Now, that’s not the dilemma. That’s what I call service – never having to clean up dishes, I don’t mind that (though I really wouldn’t mind doing some cooking of my own every once in a while). But generally speaking, it’s a good thing that we get meals served three times a day. For the winter break, however, things change. With “things” I mean the meal service. The problem is: breakfast would have to be finished before 8:30 in order for the staff to be able to prepare lunch in time. But, while on holiday, who wants to get up in the whee hours of the morning only to get breakfast? Most of my colleagues wouldn’t. So, the meal schedule changes to two meals a day. Two meals at very odd hours … a 9:30 breakfast, and a 5 o’clock dinner. With lots of nothing in between. I don’t mind, though. …

12 – 12 – twenty-12

It seems to me that today, December 12, two thousand and twelve, is a special day. Not because it’s Christmas season (although that may be exciting, too – at least for me). But because today seems to be a special date. Not that that is making my day any more special. But I feel like we should at least take note at some point and commemorate the fact that in fact we are – right now – living on the twelfth day of the twelfth month in the year of twenty twelve! When is that ever going to happen again? So, just in case you missed it, here’s my reminder. And a friendly wish from me to you: Happy everyday, this day!

The Good News, the Bad News, and a Little About Christmas Shopping

I don’t know about you, but whenever there’s good news and bad news, I prefer to hear the bad news first! So, the bad news is that this year, for the first time we have to work past the Christmas holidays. In fact, if it was really bad news, I’d have to work on Dec. 26th, which back home is still a pretty full fledged Christmas holiday, called the “2. Christmas Holiday.” Fortunately, the good news about the bad news is that I can choose to not work on Wednesday, and work on Thursday (the 27th) instead. So far the bad news. Now to the good news … The good news is that this year, because none of us have their family around, among our friends we decided to have a real deal gift exchange. (Of course, not being able to celebrate Christmas with family is the bad news of the good news!) Anyhow, since we’re always trying to make the best of things, I think it’s a pretty splendid idea to have a Christmas …

Busy Blogger

I have some exciting news to share with you! (And it’s also a little excuse for why blogging has happened so sporadically lately …) You see, I’m currently working at maintaining two blogs. Or we could say, I’m doing a double version of MistyHilltops.com. You ask why? Well, that’s what’s so exciting! I’m getting a new blog!!! That is: we are giving my current blog a facelift. A real deal, big fat facelift. My expert sister has decided to set me up with a more professional theme (thanks, dearest expert sister, you’ve made someone halfway around the world really happy!), and these days, I’ve been kind of busy trying to figure out everything with how that new blog works, how we can simplify things, and how to set up everything exactly according to my preferences. (Still working at most of all of that!) And since I actually also have a real life, a job, and a very active social life, maintaining two blogs means it’s either one or the other. And these days, it has been …
