Let the Season Begin!

It’s filled with goodies again this year. My advent calendar. I have very few traditions that I keep up, but this is one I was glad to revive last year. Admitted, this year the goodies are only half as good as they were last year (then they came directly from Germany with a huge assortment of choices – and Germany does have some great treats, I assure you!). But still, it’s a full blown advent calendar; that serves as decoration and comfort in a place where there’s otherwise few indications of the season! And if there’s no sign of Christmas outside, well then we have to make it even more like Christmas inside! In that sense, let the season begin! And I wish all of you a wonderful Christmas season 2011!

Tackling Your December Daily Project

December 1st is at hand, and for many of us this means embarking on a new journey with the December Daily project. I started a huge hybrid album last year which isn’t anywhere near finished (and I don’t see myself finishing it this year as I’m far too busy with real life at the moment), so for this season, I decided to take a simpler approach. I’m creating a digital album.   Simplicity Is Key The goal for most of us is to keep things simple, and yet to create albums that we’ll enjoy looking at even years from now. I already started my 2011 project last week, and I’m quite pleased with the outcome. But before I started, I sat down and thought through a couple of things that now prove to be very helpful as I’m further into the project, and I thought I’d share some of these considerations with you … TIP NO. 1 | Choosing the Right Format Choosing a format for your project is one key to avoid having …

Getting Ready: Christmas Greetings

Ok, so let’s get one thing straight. When it comes to birthdays, holidays, etc. I’m usually not the most organized person. As a matter of fact, it’s rather likely for me to get my act together after the event, and I’ve been known to present birthday gifts, Christmas presents, etc. even months later. I even have one birthday gift sitting on my shelf that I meant to give to a friend almost three years ago. It’s still sitting there, all packed up and what not, just waiting to be handed over to its true owner. So, you get the point: I’m not an early bird when it comes to gift giving or even card sending, for that matter (and it’s not something I’m proud of, really!) This year, however, is special. As a matter of fact, I managed to mail out my Christmas cards a week before Thanksgiving (though psst! – I’m not telling you here that I meant to mail those cards last year, and the year before; just never got to it). …

About Santa Clauses, Purple Christmas Trees & Shopping in Town

Yep. It’s Christmas season. Even in China. How I know? Because you can see it in the streets. Well, not every street, of course, but certain places do show. Like this one, where we went shopping today. Now, I’m not going to start a debate here whether the stuff they sell is pretty, or worth buying or anything. As we all know, tastes differ – widely at times. So, I’ll let you make your own decision as to whether you like what you see, or not. Here. Maybe this will make your decision process a little easier: Anyways, going shopping into town, we got to see lots of Christmas stuff, and some pretty impressive decoration, too. Like the giant Christmas tree which was so purple that it hurt my eyes; or this castle that was so magnificent that we had to have our picture taken with it: Still not in Christmas mood yet? Well, that’s not my fault then. Showing you all these Christmas pics, I’ve done all I could to get you there, haven’t …

Monday Highlight: Christmas in August

Who says I can’t scrap Christmas pages in August? At least my mom started laughing at me when she heard that I was planning to scrap those Christmas pages that had long been overdue. And I’m sure there’s other people out there thinking: What is she doing, scrapping Christmas pages in the middle of summer? But since in the photobook project I’m working on there were mostly Christmas pages left to scrap, I thought to myself: Why not go ahead and scrap those pages, even when it is August? It makes me long for my favorite season of the year! Anyways, hours of scrapping and about seven double pages of Christmas layouts later, I’m finally done, and I thought, I’d share some of those pages here with you. Who knows, maybe it’ll inspire you not to wait till the next Christmas season begins, (while you’re already making new memories), to start scrapping those old memories from last year !

Saturday Feature: Christmas Presents

Christmas is just behind us and as I was packing up all my Christmas decorations today, I thought I’d share with you the Christmas presents I got over the last couple of weeks. It usually turns out quite the interesting selection of gifts – some of which are rather useful, others …, well, you decide … Included in the list of things I got were: 1 stuffed animal 1 plush photo album 1 set of coasters (decorated with traditional Chinese art) 5 apples 2 calendars 1 bowl of American, home-made cookies & sweet treats (yum!) peanut cake 1 box of tea + soap & natural sponge 1 pair of mittens + 1 food container + 1 pencil case

DIY: December Daily 2010

I promised you I would keep you up-to-date with my December Daily project. Well, time got the better of me, and with all the Christmas celebrations going on, there was hardly enough time for anything at all, but I did manage to get a couple of pages done, and I’m still working on some more.   As I told you already, it is a rather interactive book – with lots of background information about Christmas. But as there is lots to discover, I hope it won’t get my readers too bored (once it’s done). Generally, I went for irregular page sizes. This makes assembling for me easy, because I don’t have to have each page matching perfectly. It has a really random feel to it and I’m glad I decided to do it that way. I’ll keep adding to the December Daily photo gallery, as I get more pages done, so make sure to come back later to check it out.

Around Town: In the store

So, guess what! I went shopping in the supermarket on campus that I always frequent today and encountered a curious thing: all the Christmas decorations were gone! Vanished! After most of that decoration had been up for over a year (or even  more?), collecting piles of dust along the way, now – just a few days after Christmas – it’s all gone! Now I don’t get to look at little Santa Clauses and Christmas baubles at Easter or in the summer holidays. But I guess, that’s a good thing, right?
