Somewhat Like a Winter Wonderland

Look at what happened to our hallway: Thanks to the floor decorating competition, it looks like Christmas all around! Admitted, I can’t take any credit for the way our hallway looks now, but I like it all the same! Every year, the foreign faculty housing has a floor decorating competition for the foreign faculty. While some years, having the competition doesn’t mean much at all, in other years, my colleagues outdo themselves. This year, they turned our hallway into a winter wonderland. And then, after the walk through the chilly snow scenery, you’ll end up right here: By a cozy fire where you can shake off that winter chill. I just wish, there was a little more reality to this … Anyways, I’ll keep you posted with what happened in the other hallways.

December Daily – Week 3 Recap

Time is flying! I can’t believe another week has past already. I’ve already completed my third week, and only one week till Christmas is left! Here’s a glimpse at my pages and activities this past week …               And I actually managed to also create the cover page for my front and back cover.   Can’t wait to see everything printed out and assembled into an actual album. Will definitely show you when it’s finished! I actually love how doing the December Daily project helps me make this season so much more meaningful. After all, I’m a lot more intentional about how I spend my days as I’m trying to incorporate something related to Christmas and its traditions into my daily activities. I hope you still have just as much fun with your DD project as I have. And don’t forget: Keeping things easy is half the work. PS. For more inspiration, see Week 2, and Week 1.

Oh Christmas Tree …

It’s up again. The Christmas tree that is. Today, when I crossed the square, I saw it. After years of being around campus, I still haven’t quite decided yet whether I think it’s just a really bad tree, or flat-out ugly! But at least it’s a tree. A very artificial looking, skeleton like tree. And of course, the students are staying true to their tradition – within the hour of setting up the tree, they start adorning it with little notes of good wishes. Soon, the bottom part of the tree will be covered with them. But then, I think a tree full of wishes is better than a bare tree – even though both don’t really have much in common with a real Christmas tree! But who cares about such things as these here!? At least we have something like a tree. And with some imagination, it might even be considered a Christmas tree!

Food Corner: Vanilla Crescents (Vanillekipferl)

I’ve got another recipe for you this week. This time it’s about my all-time favorite Christmas cookies – vanilla crescents, also known as Vanillekipferl.   You will need … 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour / 200 g all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder (what fits on the tip of a knife) 1/2 cup granulated sugar / 100 g sugar 1-2 teaspoons vanilla powder / 1 pouch vanilla powder 1 egg (medium) 1/2 cup softened butter (unsalted) / 125 g softened butter or margarine 2/3 cup ground almonds / 100 g ground almonds 1/2 cup icing sugar (for dusting) 1-2 teaspoons vanilla powder / 1 pouch vanilla powder (for dusting) Time: 60 min. Difficulty: medium Preparations: Preheat oven to 350 F (160-180 °C depending on your oven). Lightly grease baking sheets, or line with parchment paper.   Directions: Sift flour into a bowl and mix with baking powder. Add all other ingredients and mix until the dough is smooth. Roll some of the dough into a strip, about as thick as a pencil. Cut off pieces …

He’s Here …

Here he is. Santa Clause. The other day I promised you some insight to some of the Christmas decoration around, and here’s our first glimpse of Santa Clause. Actually he doesn’t just greet you at the door. He’s definitely made it inside as well. As a matter of fact, once you enter the lobby, he’s all around you, hanging like banners from the ceiling. So, even if you wanted to, there’s no escaping him. No wonder he’s able to tell whether you’ve been naughty or nice recently. And for anyone wanting to live in our building, you’d better behave yourself, because Santa’s definitely watching …

Journaling Café: Christmas Lights

Christmas is the season of lights: candle light, twinkle lights, illuminated decorations – we’ve certainly found our way to counter the gloom of winter and brighten up this darkest time of the year. Today’s journaling prompts, therefore, are all about the Christmas lights that bring hope and joy into our hearts and homes: With all the business of preparing for the holidays, I hope you’ll still find time to think about a few of these prompts, and maybe they’ll even inspire you to recall some of your favorite memories of the past. In any way, happy story telling, and don’t get so busy that you don’t have the time to stop and be merry and bright for a moment each day throughout the season!
