A Trip to Radolfzell

Ein Besuch in Radolfzell   Vacation mode is back in full swing, and that means, day tripping. Our trip of the day took us to Radolfzell, where we wanted to go shopping. And since we weren’t that far from the downtown area, we decided to make a quick trip into town as well for some ice-cream and internet.

Next Stop: Unteruhldingen & Meersburg

Nächster Halt: Unteruhldingen & Meersburg After taking things slowly for a couple of days, I finally was ready to go explore myself. So, I accompanied my family, first to the marina of Unteruhldingen and then to the little, picturesque town of Meersburg.

Lake Constance Vacation

Bodenseeferien   The weather hasn’t been too generous with us these past few days, but here are a couple of pics from sunset: Das Wetter war in den letzten Tagen nicht sonderlich großzügig mit uns, aber hier sind mal ein paar Bilder vom Sonnenuntergang:

A Break from Break

Ferienreif   Can you believe it? Though I just came from a 4-day vacay with sister, I totally feel like a need a break. A break from break, so to speak. Of course, that vacay with sister was extremely busy, riding our bikes all day for days. And then there were two days of straight travels. So, while my family was eager to get out and check out the area, I was happy to stay put and take a really slow day.

North & South

Norden & Süden   We’re on the road. Again. This time we’re going as far south in Germany as we can for our vacation at Lake Constance. That means, in two days we traveled from the northernmost corner of Germany to the southernmost area. Or, to say it in car license plate language, we’re going from NF (Nordfriesland) to FN (Friedrichshafen), and in between is the whole length of Germany. Wir sind auf der Straße. Wieder.

Good-Bye Sylt

Abschied von Sylt   Saying good-bye is always sad. Especially, if you’ve had such a great time as we had had on the island of Sylt. Good-bye it was, however, and we got up really early to pack our tent and everything. And since we finished packing in good time, we even had time to go back to the beach for a moment. Click on images to enlarge / Zum Vergrößern auf die Bilder klicken

Rømø & List/Sylt

Rømø is a Danish island. And to Rømø we wanted to go today. In order to make the ferry, we got up really early. We put the bikes on a bus and rode to Sylt’s northernmost town, List. There we got onto the ferry that took us to Denmark where we spent all morning riding around. We even ended up on Northern Europe’s largest beach. In the afternoon we took the ferry back to Sylt and then rode our bikes all the way to the northernmost tip of the island (which also happens to be the northernmost tip of Germany). It was almost dark, when we got back to our tent, but there was still time for a quick trip to the beach.

Hörnum and the Seal Bank

Hörnum und die Seehundbank   It had been dear sister’s explicit wish to visit the seal banks of the coast of Amrum. Trips there are offered from Sylt’s southern most tip, Hörnum. And since we had our bikes and we wanted to catch the 10:00 am ship, we got up really early. While riding the 12 km or so, we realized that we wouldn’t be able to make it on time. But there’s another ship right around noon, so we decided to take things more slowly. We caught the right ship, were lucky to be among the first aboard, and we were lucky to be on the right side of the ship – from where you’d be able to see the seals. And of course, we were lucky to see the seals on that sandbank, which was flooded a little at the time. Once back in Hörnum, we caught a glimpse of Willi (the seal that decided to inhabit the harbor) and gave up our plan to visit the lighthouse there (s.o. on the ship …

Sylt: Westerland & Kampen

After breakfast, we set out to explore the center of the island a little. Our first stop of the day was Westerland, where we climbed to a lookout on the highest dune in this part. We also made a quick visit to the beach and then had lunch at the Westerland promenade. From there we moved on toward Kampen, past the lighthouse “Langer Kristian”, the highest point of Sylt called “Uwe Düne”, and the nearby red cliff (Rotes Kliff). From there we looked at the cross light (Quermarkenfeuer), rode into Kampen, past Langer Kristian again and then on the other side of the island back to Westerland.

Sylter Adventures – It All Begins

Sylter Abenteuer – Es geht los   Getting up in the wee hours of the morning was the order of the day. Why? Because this was a day of travels. My friends wanted to set out and catch their train from Hamburg and since sister und I wanted to go the same direction, my Dad decided to take us all to the various train stations in Hamburg from where we needed to head out. We all had a lot of luggage. My friends because they’d been traveling in Europe for a while, and sister and I because we had our bikes and our camping gear with us. Sylt was our destination and we’d decided to carry all our stuff with our bikes. After dropping off our friends at the main station, we made it to our train on time and then the adventure was all ours! As it is, Sylt is the only German island in the North Sea that is connected to the mainland via a train dam. It’s quite fun to ride on …
