Busy Days | Geschäftigkeit

EnglishCampus has gotten really busy over the last couple of weeks. Now, any time of day, we run into crowds of people pretty much anywhere we go. That is especially true during meal times when everyone is out and about in pursuit of something to eat. DeutschDer Campus ist in den letzten Wochen sehr geschäftig geworden. Jetzt ist man zu jeder Tageszeit von Menschen umgeben. Egal wo auf dem Campus man sich befindet. Und das trifft besonders zu den Mahlzeiten zu, wo jeder auf der Jagd nach etwas Essbarem ist.

EnglishOne of the fun things about the cafeterias around campus is that in some places you can put together your own meal. It’s not really buffet style. (I’ve never come across buffet style restaurants outside of hotels around here, because people would take too much advantage of that.) But you still get to collect whatever you want, and then you pay by weight of what’s on your plate. DeutschEine der interessanten Fakten der Mensas auf dem Campus ist, dass man sich mancherorts die Mahlzeit selbst zusammenstellen kann. Man kann es nicht wirklich Buffet nennen, da es sowas hier außerhalb von Hotels nicht wirklich gibt. (Leute hier würden das zu sehr ausnutzen.) Aber man kann trotzdem eine Mahlzeit aus vielen verschiedenen Angeboten zusammenstellen, und dann bezahlt man nach Gewicht.

Quite the Scare | Nächtlicher Schreck

EnglishWith the nights finally cooling down, and the air quality being acceptable for most of this year, I started sleeping with an open window recently – instead of using the A/C. But the other night I got quite the scare. Right outside my window is a roof that’s made up of glass tiles. And one of the tiles right in front of my window decided to burst into thousands of shards in the middle of the night. Things sounded like they were exploding, and then I could hear the rain of glass shards. Needless to say, there wasn’t much sleep for me afterwards. Glass splinters even dropped all the way on my window sill, even though my window was open just a small crack. I’m just glad it wasn’t anything more than just a glass tile that burst. EnglishThough things still feel pretty much like summer, when walking around campus, we do note that there’s a hint of autumn in the air: The nights cool down. And the leaves reach that stage where they slowly start to pale in color, although everything will still stay green for a while. DeutschAuch wenn es sich immer noch so ziemlich wie Sommer anfühlt, bemerken wir, dass schon ein Hauch von Herbst in der Luft liegt. Die Nächte werden langsam kühler (statt andauernder Hitze). Und die Blätter erreichen das Stadium, wo das Grün nicht mehr ganz so frisch dreinschaut. Allerdings wird es wohl noch ein Weilchen dauern, bis der bunte Blätterregen kommt.

Back to School | Ab in die Schule

EnglishAfter the long months of summer break, today was finally the day to go back to school. And with my first day of class, I’m meeting my new students for this year. It’s a day that has been long anticipated. Though I can’t say that I don’t like having a nice long summer break. Besides, I have been busy getting everything ready for my colleagues and the semester. DeutschNach der langen Sommerpause kam heute endlich der Tag, an dem es für mich zurück in den Unterricht ging. Und am ersten Schultag lerne ich meine neue Studenten kennen, die ich dieses Jahr begleiten darf. Es ist ein Tag, der schon lange erwartet wurde. Aber ich genieße auch die freien Ferientage. Und ich habe ja schon einen ganzen Berg Arbeit hinter mir, um alles für die Kollegen und das Semester vorzubereiten.

EnglishIt’s test day for a lot of students around school. And those who don’t have the test know it’s going on simply by all the measures taken to avoid cheating. When entire roads are blocked from traffic, that’s when you know: Serious business is going on. DeutschEs ist Prüfungstag für viele der Studenten. Und jene unter uns, die keine Prüfung haben, sind spätestens dann betroffen, wenn sie ganze Straßenblöcke abgeriegelt finden, um damit das Mogeln zu reduzieren. Jap, Prüfungen sind eine ernstzunehmende Sache!

Blue Skies Ahead | Blauer Himmel voraus

EnglishThis year I’ve noticed a big improvement in the air quality. Now, I can’t decide whether that has more to do with how many businesses shut down because of Covid restrictions, or with actually working on making the air better. But whatever it is, we’ve been having a lot more blue sky days this year than in all previous years. The improvement is so notable that I’ve even started to open my window – not just on rainy days (when the air gets “showered” by the rain, and the dust gets washed away), but on any day. Especially at night, when the summer heat has finally started to cool down a little. DeutschDieses Jahr habe ich eine große Verbesserung der Luftqualität bemerkt. Food Watchers | Wächter der Mahlzeiten

EnglishThese days I noticed a new species on campus. Yellow vests, sitting around at seemingly random places. Only after some investigation did I find out that these are the food watchers. Delivering food to dorms has become very popular in recent years. But as it happens, and sadly seems to happen a lot, meals tend to get taken by others who neither ordered, nor paid for it. And so to stop that from happening, these watchers have been hired, and that’s what they do: They sit around, and watch. (Often their cell phones more than the food.) Not that they would know who ordered what food and all that. But hey, if it makes a good impression, and gives people a job, it’s a good thing, right? Putting My Schedule Together | Den Stundenplan zusammenschustern

EnglishWe’ve been waiting for our schedules. But as usual, no one is in a rush to hand those out to us. (I still remember years, where we received the schedules the night before we were supposed to start class. So, it’s just important to always be at the ready.) In recent years, our schedules are posted (automatically) on the school website the moment they’re done. Which means two things: There’s a way to find out your schedule early. Said schedule can still change until the day school is set to begin. (Which means it means very little until the first day of class.) This year, we’ve been impatiently waiting for our schedules – one big reason being that we’ve requested not to be placed in a particular building. And while our schedules aren’t officially published yet, our individual classes are. So, I’ve found a way of putting my schedule together by checking my individual classes.
