Bad Hair Air Day

Dicke Luft It’s been bad. Really bad these days. So bad, in fact, that we’re No. 1 in the ranking of bad air quality. In other words, the air we’re breathing is officially rated as hazardous. All the better that I have an air purifier at home. Now I can stay at home, all cozy and nice, and don’t have to worry about what’s going on out there. And anyhow, I do have very caring colleagues! Sie ist schlecht. Wirklich schlecht zur Zeit. Die Luft, meine ich. So schlecht, dass wir die Rangliste mit schlechtester Luft gerade anführen. Mit anderen Worten, die Luft, die wir atmen ist offiziell as gefährlich eingestuft worden. Wie gut, dass mein trautes Heim über einen Luftreiniger verfügt. Da kann ich’s mir doch in aller Ruhe zuhause gemütlich machen. Und nicht zuletzt habe ich sehr fürsorgliche Kollegen.                 PS. The number you see here was updated later. Oh Tannenbaum – Mal Wieder The school’s Christmas tree is always worth a little story. And while it’s usually the world’s ugliest Christmas tree, I can’ complain, because at least we have a Christmas tree. For those of you who’ve been around a while, you might have seen picture’s of the tree in previous years. Like this one: Der Weihnachtsbaum unserer Uni ist immer eine Geschichte wert. Leckere Bratäpfel mit {selbstgemachter} Karamelsoße Someone brought me a bunch of apples, and so I thought, I should do something fun with them. And the first idea that came to my mind was baked apples. But I wanted more than just the classic baked apples (though those are yummy enough, I grant). So, I went on a (Pinterest) search, for some inspiration and then made my own, super yummy version of it. Jemand hat mir letzte Woche Äpfel dagelassen, und da wollte ich mir was für einfallen lassen. Mein erster Gedanke waren Bratäpfel, aber ich wollte etwas Besseres als die klassische Variante (obwohl die ja auch schon sehr lecker ist). Nikolaustag 2016 Two things. One: Yes, I’m aware that I’m far too old to care about such things as St. Nicholas Day (which is a very exciting day for kids in Germany because they get their stockings on December 6th). Two: I still love to have fun with it, simply because it’s something that reminds me of home. Of course, my mostly American dear colleagues and friends here could care less about St. Nicholas Day. But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t have fun with it. So, I’m having a blast wishing everyone a happy St. Nicholas Day, and of course, if I’m not getting any stockings today, at least I can make sure my friends do. On that note: Happy St. Nicholas Day, everyone! Zwei Dinge. Erstens: Ja, ich bin mir bewusst, dass ich viel zu alt bin, um mich um solche Dinge wie den Nikolaustag zu scheren. Detention (Or: Make-Up Day)

Nachsitzen It happened! Just as I knew it would! Remember the snow day we had a couple of weeks ago? Yeah. Never just think that you can get away with a snow day. Nope. And don’t for a second dream of finding a sensible time to make up for missed classes. Not here! Nope. We had to make up the snow day. And guess, which day – of all days – they decided for us to have those missed classes! Sunday. Yes. That’s where I live. Here, Sunday is just another day in your week. Might as well go to class any way. So, I guess, students and teachers all agreed: We’d have much rather gone to school that day, and have an actual weekend! Es ist passiert! Oh, Sweet Advent Calendar

Oh, du süßer Adventkalender Yes, you’re right! I’m far too grown up to care for things like an advent calendar for myself. But where there’s so little else of Christmas around, I think you have to grab every opportunity yourself. And for me that means even having an advent calendar for myself. And this year, once more, it’s filled with lots of goodies that my friend brought with her when she came to visit from Germany this past summer. Yes! If you want to make the most of things around here, you sometimes have to think long-term. Ja, ihr habt ja recht! Ich bin schon viel zu erwachsen für meinen eigenen Adventskalender. Aber wenn es um mich her so wenig weihnachtet, dann – finde ich – muss man halt Gelegenheiten schaffen. Und für mich ist halt der Adventskalender eine solche Möglichkeit. Und dieses Jahr ist mein Kalender wieder mal mit allerlei Süßem aus Deutschland gefüllt, die meine Freundin bei ihrem Besuch im Sommer mitgebracht hat. Jawoll!
