I’d say that’s true of the tree I got to enjoy today more than ever. This kind of Christmas tree is definitely very much to my liking. And it lived up to the expectations.

Where there is no Christmas market nearby, you’ve got to bring it to your home yourself. This year I gave another try to making roasted almonds, and they were the best I made myself yet. A yummy treat for days to come!

Christmas has clearly arrived in my home. Every day, something gets added to the Christmassy things that are collecting here. Little bags arrived in the mail recently, some cute stockings, as well as the candy canes.

Every year the same procedure: I fill my good old calendar with goodies to have every day til Christmas. This year that calendar is still filled with special goodies that I brought from Germany earlier this year, so I look forward every day to a little piece of home.

It’s official now: Christmas 2021 is on its way. And even though I’m far from Germany, I still celebrate that fact with the lighting of the first candle on my advent wreath.

Every year, right after Thanksgiving, it’s time to deck the halls of my humble abode. And this year, it’s no different.
Contrary to German tradition, my Christmas tree comes out at the beginning of the season. But I also keep to some of the typical German traditions, such has having an advent wreath.

Entgegen deutscher Tradition kommt der Weihnachtsbaum (künstlich) gleich schon zu Anfang der Weihnachtszeit raus, aber ich halte es auch mit deutschen Traditionen, wie den Adventskranz.

Getting meals in the dining hall of the foreign faculty building used to be part of our salary. Until we finally got the school to relent, up our salary, and give us the choice where and how we wanted to eat. Ever since then, going to the dining hall has become a rare thing for me. But for Thanksgiving I was back in the dining hall, because that’s one of the meals the school invites all its foreign faculty to. So, we feasted to our hearts desires all the things the kitchen staff (and some of our colleagues) have been busy to whip up for us.

Mahlzeiten in der Cafeteria einzunehmen gehörte zu unserem Gehalt, bis wir die Schule endlich dazu bringen konnten, unser Gehalt zu ändern, und uns Freiheit bei der Wahl unserer Mahlzeiten zu lassen. Seitdem sind meine Besuche in der Cafeteria rar geworden. Aber für Thanksgiving war ich zurück. Denn das ist eine der großen Mahlzeiten, die die Schule für das Kollegium organisiert. Und so konnten wir all das schlemmern, was die Köche und ein paar unserer Kollegen in den Kochtöpfen gezaubert haben.

I remember years ago, when all the Christmas things you could get around here amounted to four colors of kitschy stuff. That has changed significantly over the years. Now you can find a lot of pretty things (even when that isn’t local). So, today, some really fun stuff arrived for me, and I feel now the most wonderful time of the year can get on its way.

Ich weiß noch vor Jahren: da gab es hier fast nichts weihnachtliches zu haben, mit Ausnahme von vier Farben, die allesamt in die Kategorie kitschig eingeordnet werden müssen. In den letzten Jahren hat sich das geändert. Jetzt findet man viele hübsche Sachen (wenn’s auch nicht lokal ist). Heute kam entsprechend Post für mich und ich habe das Gefühl, das die schönste Zeit des Jahres losgehen kann.
