Quite the Scare | Nächtlicher Schreck

EnglishWith the nights finally cooling down, and the air quality being acceptable for most of this year, I started sleeping with an open window recently – instead of using the A/C. But the other night I got quite the scare. Right outside my window is a roof that’s made up of glass tiles. And one of the tiles right in front of my window decided to burst into thousands of shards in the middle of the night. Things sounded like they were exploding, and then I could hear the rain of glass shards. Needless to say, there wasn’t much sleep for me afterwards. Glass splinters even dropped all the way on my window sill, even though my window was open just a small crack. I’m just glad it wasn’t anything more than just a glass tile that burst. EnglishThough things still feel pretty much like summer, when walking around campus, we do note that there’s a hint of autumn in the air: The nights cool down. And the leaves reach that stage where they slowly start to pale in color, although everything will still stay green for a while. DeutschAuch wenn es sich immer noch so ziemlich wie Sommer anfühlt, bemerken wir, dass schon ein Hauch von Herbst in der Luft liegt. Die Nächte werden langsam kühler (statt andauernder Hitze). Und die Blätter erreichen das Stadium, wo das Grün nicht mehr ganz so frisch dreinschaut. Allerdings wird es wohl noch ein Weilchen dauern, bis der bunte Blätterregen kommt.

Back to School | Ab in die Schule

EnglishAfter the long months of summer break, today was finally the day to go back to school. And with my first day of class, I’m meeting my new students for this year. It’s a day that has been long anticipated. Though I can’t say that I don’t like having a nice long summer break. Besides, I have been busy getting everything ready for my colleagues and the semester. DeutschNach der langen Sommerpause kam heute endlich der Tag, an dem es für mich zurück in den Unterricht ging. Und am ersten Schultag lerne ich meine neue Studenten kennen, die ich dieses Jahr begleiten darf. Es ist ein Tag, der schon lange erwartet wurde. Aber ich genieße auch die freien Ferientage. Und ich habe ja schon einen ganzen Berg Arbeit hinter mir, um alles für die Kollegen und das Semester vorzubereiten.
