Behind the Scenes: Creating Journal Mats from Custom Shapes

The other day, I created a layout on which I used a leaf for my journaling, and after uploading it to the gallery, I got several comments because of that, so I thought, today I’d show you how to create a journal mat just like that, using custom shapes and working with a text path. Anyways, I haven’t done a tutorial in so long, it’s really time for something new … In this tutorial you will learn how  to … … create a custom shape and clip a paper to it; … ink the edges for a more worn look; … create a text path from a custom shape and fill it with your journaling; … add a border to your shape. Here is how it works … Step 1: Create a Custom Shape On your canvas, go to “Custom Shapes” (U), choose a shape, and holding down the shift key, create a proportional shape. Step 2: Rasterize Shape Rasterize the shape.   Step 3: Create an Expanded Selection With the Magic Wand Tool (W), …

Monday Highlight: Oodles of Tags

They’re small. They’re simple. They’re basic. And yet, time and again have I referred to them, used them in all different sorts and fashion: Tags. Julie Billingsley has several tag packs in her store that I’ve used so many times, I wouldn’t even be able to count the pages. I’ve used them to add dates (the obvious, of course), but also as embellishment, or to add sentiments, extra information, or even to serve as my journaling mat. If there’s ever one investment I’ve made that I haven’t regretted at all, it’s getting those tags. Here, take a look at some examples of how I used them …

Treasure Sunday October 22nd

Another week has passed, and along the way I picked up a couple more gems. I Am Thankful by alb52 Starting off today’s treasure hunt with this little gem. I love the use of white space here, the pops of color and paint splats, and I think that photo is so precious! Playing with the Leaves by blanulak Another page that makes beautiful use of white space is this gem: I love the brush work she added to this page, and the title, which works so well with the composition. Natural Beauty by liljatr Love the blending on this page as well as the muted colors with the pops of red. Gift of Daughters by anneofalamo This next page has a great vintage feel to it. Love the shadows, that cluster in the top right, and how worn everything looks. Harvest by Mother Bear Next up is “Harvest,” a beautiful fall themed page. I love the soft feel to it, the colors and composition, and what a perfect way to scrap this photo! Life is …

P2D: When Fall Is Coming Early

I have another paper to digi sample for you today. I already showed you the page that inspired you in another post (I did a hybrid scraplift of it). This time, I spun the page around, and lifted it that way. Here’s once more: “Good Reader”. And here’s my digital page I created with this inspiration: Now it’s time for you to try your hand at scraplifting some paper layouts!

Freebie Friday: Tower

Got you a new template to play with this weekend. It’s based on one of my older layouts “Iron Tower,” and so far has been one of my more elaborate templates. I hope you’ll find some time playing with it this weekend, and don’t forget: the download link will only be up temporarily. As always: Happy Friday scrappers! Note: Please do not re-distribute this template in any way (you may share the link to this post), and when you use this template, please make sure to credit it to Misty Hilltops Designs.

Hybrid Hub: Card No. 17

Let’s take a look at another thank-you card that I created a while back. This one was put together with a mini kit by Kristin Cronin-Barrow, which was part of a Quarterly Assortment last year, and still available at SSD. I also used Darcy Baldwin’s Stamp Pad Alpha for this. It comes with a pretty simple design, but adding the right kind of papers, it’ll make anyone happy to receive this little handcrafted token of gratitude.

Enable Me: Color Palette Generator

Have you ever heard about color palette generators? They break up images into their various shades of color and create matching color palettes. A pretty neat tool that can come in handy sometimes when you need to decide which kit to use for a photo, or want to create something with a certain color palette. There are tons of color palette generators out there on the www, when you just google them. But I found one that I discovered, which is pretty neat. I rather like it, because It allows you to use images from a URL as well as uploading one from your computer, It creates various shades of color palettes – light, medium, dark, It gives you the number for the color, which is perfect for web use, as well as, in Photoshop when you want to make sure you use the exact same color again. So, if you ever need a color palette generator, here you have one that I found works pretty well!

Monday Highlight: A Minibook of Memories

Yes, you’re right: It’s been a little quiet in my galleries recently. For one, I’ve been really busy with work and real life lately, and for another: I got inspired. “Inspired?” you ask. Yep. Another one of my inspirations. This time it’s all about minibooks. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just hop on over to this place HERE. Take a look at this lady’s scrap-creations. In my opinion, she’s created some pretty amazing minibooks. Or THIS one. This lady, too, has lots of super fun travel books/journals that she creates. So much inspiration to look at. It actually got me thinking: I hardly ever print out photos. And wouldn’t it be fun to have a little collection of photos, memories, journaling to put together into a small photo/minibook? Well, I didn’t just think about it. I actually went ahead and did it. Or at least, I started it. Still got a lot more pages to do (and am realizing that this book probably exceeds the size that I had expected it to …

Treasure Sunday October 16th

Did I really skip two Sundays in a row? Well, but I went treasure hunting today again, and found quite some gems … A Feeling of You by milatolela Starting off with a pretty fall themed page. I love the soft colors with the pops of pink. The stitch clusters give this page a great dynamic, and then, most of all, I think that photo is sooo adorable. Thankful Hearts by lingovise Staying with the fall theme, I have this beauty next. She did a great job with the various clusters, beautifully adding the papers and elements, and with all the business of this page, I love how the photo still stands out. What a precious moment to capture! Fabulous Fall by aussiekat Still more fall pages. I can’t help it – autumn is one of my favorite seasons … Here, I love the artistic feel of this page, the various pops of colors, and the playful arrangement of flowers and leaves around the photo and journaling. Great shadowing, too! Grow Bloom Dream by wombat …

P2D Inspiration: Getting There

New Saturday, new P2D inspiration. Today, I’d like to show you a page, for which I used to traditional paper layouts as inspiration. What caught my eye with “City Girl,” was the background paper – showing a city map (similar – or maybe the same papers – are available at Designer Digitals), and the overall composition. From the second page, I took the road sign, ticket border, and the journaling strips. Now, for my page, I didn’t have any map background; but I figured out a perfect solution. My China Lonely Planet has lots of simplified black and white maps. I simply scanned in one page with the Shanghai map, played a bit with various blending modes, and there: I had the perfect solution, and a pretty cool map background. Worked for me! Here, I’ll show you my page, too:
