Homecoming Part 2: The Show

Part 2 of the homecoming celebrations is the show, which actually deserves the predicate grand because it IS one of the best performances we get to see throughout the year. And being, as it was, all about water, we were in for a treat. But see for yourself:

Water & Earth – A Grand Occasion

Every year toward the end of the school year, it’s all about Homecoming, and of course this includes the grand homecoming parade (if you ignore the fact that “grand” can be quite a relative term, esp. considering how many onlookers you (don’t) see watching the parade). The fun part about this year’s parade was that it was all about water, earth, and saving the world’s natural resources etc., though I wonder how much of the world’s environment was protected with this parade, esp. considering the materials that were used to create the floats. As a matter of fact, I wasn’t the only one able to observe that plastic and styrofoam generally are considered harmful for the environment. But maybe for a parade meant to raise awareness exceptions can be made …

Kissing the Fish & Other Wedding Stories

Here goes another wedding. Like every year someone among my colleagues gets married and then everyone is invited (I shared the invitation with you a couple weeks ago). This wedding was a little special because we got to have Hershey’s Hugs and Kisses – a special treat from the U.S.. And boy did we make sure to treat us well with those (maybe to the annoyance of some of our colleagues around, but who cares when there’s so much chocolate to be had). Of course, this being a wedding and all, there was a lot more than chocolate. There were the bride and groom, and cupcakes, and lots and lots of food. Like the fish my friend attempted to get acquainted with a little more closely …   But see for yourself:

Some Dreadful News

Here’s what should never happen to you: receiving an urgent email telling you you can’t leave before July 15th when you just bought your plane ticket two days ago, booking a flight which leaves some time mid June. That’s bad news. But guess what. Exactly this is happening to me. Why? Because we just found out that our residential permits won’t allow us to leave any earlier. And well, I’m curious how we are going to get out of this mess. And I’m definitely curious when I’m going to be leaving for home this year!

The Kong Fu Restaurant

The Kong Fu Restaurant (aka the Donkey Restaurant among my acquaintances) is a rather special place in town. It’s special because the food is considered good, the environment excellent (if you ignore the noise), and the way you get your tea served is … well … rather special. You see, usually, when you go to a restaurant you’ll have waiters who take care of all your needs. The Kong Fu restaurant isn’t any different in that regard, except that the waiters aren’t simple waiters actually, they are specialists in serving your tea Kong-Fu-style. You’re not quite sure what that’s all about? Well, let me enlighten you. Instead of a simple tea pot, they have a container with a very long hose, and instead of simply pouring your drink they’ll jump and roll and move around you like a real Kong Fu athlete, and all the while your cup is being filled. Maybe one day, once I have downloaded the video from my camera I can show you a little clip of what that looks like. …

Ticket Home

I’m excited, because I bought my ticket home. Home for the summer, leaving behind a leaky-bathroom problem (unless they’ll fix it before I leave, which I’m at the point of doubting, seriously); home to spend the summer with family and friends again. I had a blast last year, and I’m looking forward to a summer less busy, but more with family and friends. Here are a few of the highlights from last year:

The Weekly Visit

Did I tell you I had a problem with a leak in my bathroom? Of course I did! Has anything been solved yet? Nope. As a matter of fact, I’ve started to insist on having workers come to fix it on a weekly basis, and so they keep coming. But very time they send different people. And of course, these people come without tools because they say that they first need to inspect the problem (how many times does someone need to inspect an obvious leak to realize that it is a problem?) As a matter of fact, I’ve gotten used to all the nothings that are happening, tragically used to it! Though, sometimes I do get frustrated, too! Really frustrated. And I’m sorry to say that it’s the poor workers who have to suffer my temper when this whole procrastinating thing actually gets to me a bit too much! Let’s hope for better days!

The Promise

I have a problem. A wet, moldy, leak problem. In my bathroom. You may remember. Well, for about two months now I’m trying to have my problem fixed. But the problem is that no one cares about my problem. At least not enough to actually do anything about it, even though I’m trying almost weekly to get someone to take care of this. And so it happened that last week, before the May holiday, I had yet another group of workers inspect the problem. And they promised me that after the May holiday, that would be on May 2nd, they’d come back to fix things. Like they always promise. And like they never fix it. And so it happened that May 2nd has come. As well as May 3rd, and May 4th, and still there’s no fixing in sight. My poor poor little bathroom!

An Airport Tradition

It’s a tradition already. Every year, I take students and friends on a little bike trip to the airport. Of course, I have to explain to them – as none of them has ever traveled by plane – that going to the airport building (otherwise known as terminal) is far from exciting, and that the real adventure waits out there on one of the fields at the end of the runway. Unquestionably, they enjoy the little excursion immensely, and I? I get to have a sunburn (on a not sunny day – or does it look like the sun is out on the pictures?) and a lot of extra exercise. (And I had the benefit of getting my bike cleaned, after it had collected dust for several months over the winter).   Starting out from the school gate. We’ve arrived. First glimpses. Waiting for the planes to come in. And there is one!

The Butter Bowl

We used to have butter, packaged nicely and ready to go. Used to. Now, things are different. Now our butter is served in a bowl so as to make sure no one takes more butter than you’re supposed to (as in: as much butter as is supposed to go on your toast). Having butter served in a bowl, however, usually turns into some sort of mess, because other users usually don’t care about making sure their butter knives are clean etc., though quite honestly, I find that yuck! Today, however, was a good day. Because I actually found the butter bowl clean and untampered with. I was so delighted, that I promptly had to take a photo of a beautifully clean butter bowl.
