Die Burgfräulein
To Meersburg Castle we went today. After seeing the castle from afar every time we passed through Meersburg, my sister finally insisted on going there and looking inside the place. And that’s what we did. We toured the castle and the grounds, looked at dungeons and torture chambers as well as the great hall, the kitchens and other facilities of a typical medieval castle. And we got to see the rooms in which one of Germany’s most renowned female poets, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff had lived and died.
Auf die Meersburg gings heute. Nachdem wir die Burg schon von Ferne gesehen haben, jedes Mal, wenn wir nach Meersburg sind, hat Schwester darauf bestanden, dass es nun endlich mal auf Burgerkundung gehen sollte. Und das taten wir auch. Wir sahen uns in der Burg um, sahen uns Verliese, Folterkammern, aber auch den Rittersaal, die Küchen und andere Räumlichkeiten eines typisch mittelalterlichen Schlosses an. Und wir sahen auch die Räume, in denen eine der berühmtesten deutschen Dichterinnen, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff gewohnt hatte und auch gestorben war.
A Poem – Ein Gedicht
The vine blooms, its mild aroma
Pervades the dewy environs,
And near and far the breeze sways
The colorful adornment of flowers.How it wafted around me, how it hummed
With birds, bees, and butterflies,
How its silken banner fluttered
The branch, so newly hung with ripeness.
Still one seeks out the sunshine
And takes a seat in a dry place;
