Culture Week – Here We Go Again | Und wieder einmal ist Kulturfest

Every year in early November our school celebrates the different cultures of the world. Normally, this is a big affair, where for three days the foreign faculty has to put on shows and activities representing the various (non-)Asian continents of the world. (We have enough Asians around to represent their own continent.) This year the foreign faculty are so few, we only have to set up activities for the afternoons. Obviously, I come out for Europe Day, and I don my German dirndl – a traditional Bavarian dress.

Jedes Jahr Anfang November feiert die Uni die verschiedenen Kulturen der Welt. Normalerweise ist das eine große Sache, wo die ausländische Fakultät für drei Tage Halligalli macht mit Shows und Aktivitäten, die die verschienen (nicht-)asiatischen Kontinente repräsentieren. (Es gibt genug Asiaten, die ihren eigenen Kontinent vertreten können). Dies Jahr ist die ausländische Fakultät so klein, dass es nur Nachmittags Programm gibt. Keine Frage, dass ich am Europatag beteiligt bin. Und dann wird das Dirndl hervorgekramt und fleissig repräsentiert.

My friends like to get together. And they like to have great meals together. Lucky, we don’t need special occasions to do just that – getting together and having good meals. We just love doing it any time.

Meine Freunde kommen gerne zusammen. Und sie essen auch gerne zusammen. Zum Glück für uns braucht es keinen besonderen Anlass, um zusammenzukommen, und ein schönes Essen zu haben. Wir tun das gerne aus jedem Anlass.

Autumn here usually lasts about 2 weeks. And it’s never the Indian summer type season that I know from home. But we just had a very glorious autumn day, with blue skies, and if you look closely, you can find those golden leaves.

As much as it’s nice to get away from campus every once in a while, nature on campus has one big upside: it’s rarely ever really crowded. While there are students around, especially since the campus has been in general lockdown, there’s plenty of space to breathe and enjoy that autumn is finally on its way.

So schön es auch ist, hin und wieder mal rauszukommen, so hat der Campus doch einen Punkt, der f¨ur sich spricht: Er ist sehr viel weniger überlaufen. Obwohl die Studenten da sind, gibt es gerade seit sich der Campus generell im Lockdown befindet genug Platz zum durchatmen, und um den Einzug des Herbstes zu genießen.

A little addendum to the recent faculty trip: Going to the mountain for a little hike, we quickly realized: nature seems to be overrated around here. In fact, we spent most of our time that afternoon pushing forward with the crowds, who wanted to get up that mountain themselves. So much for hiking in the great outdoors!

Ein kleiner Nachtrag zu unserer jüngsten Fakultätsreise: Beim Wandertag wurde trotz der sch¨onen Landschaft schnell klar: von der Natur bekommt man nicht viel mit. Tatsächlich verbrachten wir den größten Teil unserer Zeit damit, uns mit den Menschenmassen voranzuschieben, die ebenfalls den Berg hinauf wollten. So viel zum Thema wandern in der freien Natur!

The last day of our trip, we were taken to this beautiful mountain area, where we were allowed to roam the mountain for several hours. As is usual with almost any beautiful nature area in the country: you can’t just go for free. Tickets are required, and access is limited only possible from the official access points.

Faculty Getaway | Fakultätsreise

The school regularly invites its foreign faculty on culture trips. And this month the journey took us a little south. As usual with such trips, the itinerary is jam packed, with the attempt to hit as many scenic spots as possible.

After a late arrival the night before, I first stop was a lake where we visited different sights, and even did a little lake cruise.

Note, even though the summer floods have been months ago, the lake is still fully flooded, with certain areas still completely submerged in water.

Die Schule lädt ihre Fakultät regelmäßig zu Kulturreisen ein. Und diesen Monat führte die Reise ein wenig gen Süden. Wie gewöhnlich bei solchen Reisen ist das Programm vollgepackt bei dem Versuch, so viele Sehenswürdigkeiten abzugrasen, wie möglich.

Nach einer späten Ankunft am Abend zuvor, war heute unser erster Halt ein See, wo wir uns verschiedene Sehenswürdigkeiten ansahen, und sogar eine kleine Seerundfahrt unternahmen.

Auffallend war, wie sehr der See noch geflutet war, obwohl die Sommerfluten ja schon Monate zurückliegen. Aber manche Bereich waren noch fast völlig vom Wasser verschluckt.

Return of the Students | Die Studenten kommen

Finally! After more than a month’s delay, the students are finally returning to campus. And it’s a zoo! I ventured out today, and this is the situation I came across at the gate: no one except registered students are allowed to enter campus, so all the parents who want to drop off their kids have to do so at the gate. Needless to say: Chaos and tremendous traffic jams are inevitable when tens of thousands of students turn up.

Endlich! Nach über einem Monat Verspätung dürfen die Studenten endlich auf den Campus. Und es geht zu wie im Zoo! Ich musste etwas außerhalb vom Campus erledigen, und bin dann auf diese Situation gestoßen: Niemand, außer den registrierten Studenten darf auf den Campus. So müssen die Eltern ihren Nachwuchs am Tor abgeben. Dass bei zehntausenden Studenten da das Chaos vorprogrammiert ist, steht natürlich außer Frage.

Usually, this would be the time when all the students are back on campus, and classes are about to start. But with the current covid situation, campus is still all but empty.

No matter. I keep myself busy hanging out with my friends, and they always have something yummy and homemade to offer.

Normalerweise sind um diese Zeit die Studenten zurück auf dem Campus, und der Unterricht fängt an. Aber mit der derzeitigen Covidlage, herrscht auf dem Campus immer noch gähnende Leere.

Egal. Ich weiß mich zu beschäftigen, und gehe immer noch regelmässig zu meinen Freunden, die auch immer was Leckeres, selbstgekochtes für mich haben.

New to Campus | Neu auf dem Campus

Look what’s soon to come to campus! They’ve been building for a while, but only the other day did I discover what was going to come. And I’m not sure whether I should be excited (it’s only three minutes walking time from my front door), or worry for my money. On the other hand, I’m not too big on fast food, and that might save my day in the end (and hopefully also my money bag).

Seht mal, was hier bald Eröffnung hat! Sie sind schon seit einer Weile dabei, hier umzubauen. Aber erst jetzt habe ich herausgefunden, was kommt. Und ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob ich begeistert sein soll (es ist nur drei Minuten Fußweg von meiner Haust¨ur entfernt), oder um ich mir um meinen Geldbeutel Sorgen machen muss. Auf der anderen Seite steh ich nicht so sehr auf Fast Food, und das kann mich (und meinen Geldbeutel) am Ende retten!
