EnglishFor the first time in many years, I get to spend a full Christmas season in Germany. And that means all the old traditions are just a normal part of life. Today is the first Sunday of Advent, and for that the first of four candles is lit. Mother was busy setting up the advent display just the other day, using lots of fresh sprigs from the backyard. DeutschZum ersten Mal seit vielen Jahren darf ich die Weihnachtszeit mal wieder in Deutschland verbringen. Und das heißt, all die alten Traditionen sind Teil des normalen Lebens hier. Heute ist der erste Advent, und die erste Kerze am Adventskranz wird angezündet. Mutter hat schon ihren eigenen Kranz hergerichtet, mit frischen Tannenzweigen aus dem Garten.

EnglishIt’s been too many years since I last spent a full Christmas season in Germany. That was well over a decade ago. Needless to say, I want to make the most of the time that I get to spend here this year. So, on the first day of Christmas market, sister and I decided to go into town to check out this year’s Christmas market. Our excitement was quickly dampened when we realized that due to covid restrictions this year’s Christmas in town will be very different than what I remember. DeutschEs ist so lange her, dass ich das letzte Mal eine volle Weihnachstzeit in Deutschland erlebt habe. Über ein Jahrzehnt. Da wunderts nicht, wenn ich mir vorgenommen habe, die Zeit voll auszukosten. So, am ersten Tag des Weihnachtsmarktes, beschlossen Schwesterherz und ich einen Besuch dorthin zu machen. Die Begeisterung wich schnell der Ernüchterung, als wir feststellen mussten, dass der Weihnachstmarkt dieses Jahr aufgrund der Covid-Einschränkungen mit früheren Jahren nicht vergleichbar sein würde.

Thanksgiving

EnglishYes, people in Germany don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in November. Thanksgiving in Germany is a small event, celebrated in some communities, not celebrated as a family. But since I’ve been sharing my life with friends from the States for almost two decades now, we decided as a family to have a little Thanksgiving of our own, so I wouldn’t miss my home abroad all too much. That meant: sprucing up the dining room, and cooking a glorious, typical all American Thanksgiving meal. Sure, we didn’t have a whole turkey, because coming by one in Germany isn’t all that easy. But we still had turkey, nonetheless. In the end, it was a lovely evening of good food and friendship, shared with those that are close to us. DeutschJa, ja, in Deutschland wird Thanksgiving ja eigentlich nicht wirklich gefeiert. Erntedank hat ja nichts wirklich mit dem amerikanischen Thanksgiving zu tun. Aber da ich die vergangenen fast zwei Jahrzehnte viel mit Amis verbracht habe, haben wir uns entschlossen, als Familie ein kleines Thanksgiving zu haben, damit mir mein Zuhause …

Little Visitors | Kleine Besucher

EnglishA popular spot around the garden for the little dwellers there is the bird feeder that my mom set up right on the window sill outside the dining room. We noticed that the birds stick to them same meal times as us humans do: breakfast in the morning, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner. All sorts of birds turn up, even a very shy little robin. DeutschEine beliebte Anlaufstelle im Garten für die kleinen Gartenbewohner ist der Futterplatz, den Mutter direkt auf der Fensterbank vor dem Esszimmer aufgestellt hat. Wir haben gemerkt, dass die Vögel die gleichen Zeiten einhalten, wie wir für unsere Mahlzeiten: Frühstück, Mittagessen, Kaffee, Abendbrot. Allerlei verschiedenes Federvieh lockt der Futterplatz an, u. a. sogar ein scheues Rotkehlchen.

EnglishWe’ve been very busy in the garden. Getting everything ready for winter. We spend hours every week gathering the leaves, of which there are more on the ground every day. Soon enough, though, the play of colors will be over. DeutschDieser Tage sind wir sehr im Garten beschäftigt. Und damit, alles winterfest zu machen. Jeden Tag regnet es Blätter ohne Ende, aber uns ist auch klar, dass das Farbenschauspiel schon bald ein Ende haben wird.

EnglishWith autumn in full swing, we’ve been making the most of the season. Today that was: Making pumpkin pie cup cakes. Mom and I even went all out to shop for all the spices that go into homemade pumpkin pie spice as this is something that’s not available in Germany. The results were this yummy treat that everyone enjoyed. DeutschMit dem Herbst im vollen Schwung kosten wir die Jahreszeit voll aus. Heute bedeutete das: Kürbismuffins. Dafür sind Mutter und ich extra losgezogen, um alle Gewürze für selbstgemachtes Kürbiskuchengewürz aufzutreiben – etwas, das in Deutschland nicht so einfach erhältlich ist. Das Ergebnis war eine leckere Nascherei, die allen mundete.

EnglishWhat better time is there in the year to make a trip to the Treetop Trail in the Harz mountains than autumn? You get to be right where the action is – in the tops of the trees where the colors are exploding. Already the roadtrip there turned out a marvel of autumn splendor. And if you have never done something like this, it’s worth the trip. DeutschWann ist der Zeitpunkt besser, einen Trip zum Baumwipfelpfad (im Harz) zu machen, als der Herbst? Dann bist du nämlich mitten drin in der Action – der Explosion der Farben. Schon die Anfahrt war die Mühe wert: durchs herbstliche Deutschland. Wenn du noch nie einen einen Baumwipfelpfad gewandert ist, solltest du es auf jeden Fall auf deine Liste setzen.

Autumn Is Here | Der Herbst ist da

EnglishAutumn is in full swing, and I feel very privileged, for it is the first time in many years that I get to experience a German autumn. Where I’ve lived these last 10+ years, autumn goes like this: summer heat, summer heat, summer heat; two weeks of cooling down. Winter. In terms of gushing fall colors, it goes like this: green leaves, green leaves, mix of anything between green and brown. Brown leaves. Leaves gone. As if that’s not enough, I’ve also noticed that the workers around where I live – I kid you not – start shaking the trees as soon as they change color, and there is never that rustling of leaves on the ground as they are swept up, often before they hit the ground. So, for me to be able to experience a German autumn with all its glory is something I savor and have much appreciation for. Fly a Kite | Drachen Steigen

EnglishThe kids are back, visiting with grandma and grandpa, and though the weather is just like it ought to be in autumn, or maybe because the weather is like that, we decided to go fly a kite. Grandpa was a big help, though in the end, the rain made it a bit difficult to get the kite in the air. DeutschDie Kids sind wieder im Land, auf Besuch bei Oma und Opa. Und obgleich das Wetter sehr herbstlich ist (oder vielleicht gerade weil das Wetter so herbstlich ist) haben wir uns entschieden, Drachen steigen zu lassen. Opa war dabei eine große Hilfe. Aber am Ende hat der Regen das Unterfangen ein bisschen schwierig gemacht – nasse Drachen mögen nicht fliegen.
