Of Mountains & Snakes | Von Bergen & Schlangen

We went hiking today – a couple of colleagues and me. In the mountains a little more than an hour away from us.  The trouble: we had barely parked the car and set out when we had our first encounter of the unpleasant kind: A big black snake, at least as thick as 2-3 fingers of mine. And that wasn’t the last encounter. During our first five minutes we ran into 3 more such unpleasant fellows. Fortunately, for the rest of the hike the only other encounter we had was a a little green sampling.  Overall, though, it was a pleasant day being out in nature. Es ging heute auf Wanderschaft. Israel 2.0 – Stalactite Cave | Stalaktitenhöhle

We have an extra day, and because we’ve been to most sites during our last trip to Israel, we’re interested in seeing new things. Our Israel Pass, once again comes to the rescue. About 30 km outside of Jerusalem we find the Stalactite Cave Nature Reserve, and decide to check that out. Wir haben einen extra Tag, und da wir die meisten Sehenswürdigkeiten in Jerusalem schon bei unserer letzten Reise gesehen haben, sind wir daran interessiert, Neues zu sehen. Unser Israelpass erweist sich da mal wieder als der Retter. Etwa 30 km außerhalb von Jerusalem finden wir das Stalaktitenhöhle Naturreservat und wollen uns das mal ansehen.                               Surprisingly, the cave is very warm inside, and the formations are fascinating. Israel 2.0 – Bethesda, Western Wall & Garden Tomb | Klagemauer & Gartengrab

We’re staying in the city today and begin with the Western Wall.From here, we move to the ruins of Bethesda. Whereas during our last stay in Jerusalem we simply couldn’t find the site, this time, we were better prepared and located the ruins pretty quickly. What we didn’t know the first time around is that you access them via the courtyard of another building. Wir bleiben heute in der Stadt und beginnen mit der Klagemauer.Von hier gehts weiter zu den Ruinen von Bethesda. Bei unserem letzten Besuch in Jerusalem, konnten wir die Stätte einfach nicht finden. Dieses Mal sind wir besser vorbereitet und finden die Ruinen schnell. Israel 2.0 – Jerusalem City of David & Mount of Olives | Ölberg

The city of David is our first stop of the day. It’s outside the old city near the Kidron Valley. Die Stadt Davids steht heute für uns auf dem Programm. Sie befindet sich außerhalb der Altstadt am Kidrontal.           City of David | Davidsstadt It’s mostly ruins and rocks, but to those interested in history it’s a treasure. Es handelt sich überwiegend um Ruinen und Steine, aber für Geschichtsinteressierte ist es eine Schatztruhe.           Mount of Olives | Ölberg From here the Mount of Olives isn’t far, so we decide to walk there.We spend a little time in a grove there, then make our way back to the old city. Israel 2.0 – En Avdat & Jerusalem

Moving on from Mitzpe Ramon, our final destination today is Jerusalem. With our Israel Pass at hand, however, we check what sites may be available on the way to Jerusalem and discover En Avdat National Park. It’s not far from Mitzpe Ramon – a canyon carved deep into landscape and and quite an impressive sight. Von Mitzpe Ramon geht es wieder los. Unser Endziel für den Tag ist Jerusalem. Aber mit unserem Israelpass suchen wir nach Ausflugszielen, die uns unterwegs interessieren könnten. Wir entscheiden uns für den En Avdat Nationalpark, unweit von Mitzpe Ramon. Israel 2.0 – Mitzpe Ramon

The day starts with the most glorious morning.We’re leaving Eilat today, and moving north again. The desert town of Mitzpe Ramon is our destination. It’s famed for two things: the Ramon Crater, a huge natural landmark with lunar-like landscapes and breathtaking views; and the Ilan Ramon Museum. Der Tag beginnt mit dem herrlichsten Wetter.Heute verlassen wir Eilat, und fahren nordwärts. Die Wüstenstadt Mitzpe Ramon ist unser Ziel. Israel 2.0 – Timna Park

Timna Park is on our itinerary for today. It’s a little drive, about 40 minutes north of Eilat.We’ve barely left Eilat behind, when other drivers kindly make us aware that we have a flat tire. Lucky for us, a repair shop is just a few kilometers away, on the very road that we’re on. This detour costs us about an hour, but eventually we make it out into the desert.Timna Park is one of the few things we do on this trip that’s not included in our Israel Pass. We spend almost the entire day there. Timna Park ist das Ziel des Tages für heute. Es liegt etwa 40 Minuten Fahrtzeit nördlich von Eilat.Wir haben Eilat kaum hinter uns gelassen, da machen uns freundliche Autofahrer darauf aufmerksam, dass wir einen Platten haben. Israel 2.0 – Red Sea | Rotes Meer

The day begins with a good breakfast. Then we make for the city center, which on foot is only a couple of minutes away. Here we decide to make a boat tour with one of the glass bottom boats. Der Tag beginnt mit einem guten Frühstück. Dann machen wir uns zu Fuß auf ins Zentrum, das nur wenige Minuten entfernt liegt, wo wir uns für eine Tour mit dem  Glasbodenboot entscheiden. Glass Bottom Boat | Glasbodenboot The tour with the glass bottom boat lasts for at last an hour. We pass the dolphin swim area, the Aquarium and other sights. At the dolphin area we even stop for a while to watch.  Die Tour mit dem Glasbodenboot dauert mindestens eine gute Stunde.  Es geht vorbei an der Delfin Badestelle, dem Aquarium und anderen Sehenswürdigkeiten. Israel 2.0 – Masada & Eilat

Along the shores of the Dead Sea is the Fortress of Masada. That’s our main stop of the day.We take the cable car up to the plateau, then spend a couple of hours walking around the area. It’s an impressive site, and well worth a visit. Entlang des Ufers des Toten Meeres befindet sich die Bergfeste Masada. Hier geht es heute zunächst hin.Wir nehmen die Seilbahn hoch auf das Plateau und verbringen die nächsten Stunden damit, alles zu erkunden. Es ist eine beeindruckende Anlage und lohnt den Besuch.                         Afterwards, we drive all the way down to Eilat where we will be spending the next few days. Danach geht es nach Eilat, wo wir die nächsten paar Tage verbringen werden.
