I’m back in the mountains. This time brother-in-law, nephew, and buddy are my hiking companions. We decided to check out the Austrian Alps, though we’re not far from the German border, and the Swiss border will be just the reach of an arm away as you will see.
Our destination today will be the Totalp Cabin where we’ve booked lodging to stay overnight. (The Alps can be busy this time of year, and it pays off to book well in advance.)
We get there by car, which we park at the valley station of the cable car.
But we don’t take the cable car. As we have the entire day ahead of us, and taking the cable car will only save us an hour or so, we take to the trails right from the start.

Ich bin zurück in den Bergen. Diesmal mit Schwager, Neffe, & Co. Wir haben uns dieses Mal für die österreichischen Alpen entschieden, aber befinden uns nicht weit von der deutschen Grenze. Und die schweizer Grenze ist mehrfach nur eine Armlänge von uns entfernt, wie ihr sehen werdet.
Unser Ziel heute ist die Totalphütte, wo wir eine Nacht gebucht haben. (Die Alpen sind um diese Jahreszeit gut besucht, und es lohnt sich, sich schon im Voraus um einen Hüttenplatz zu bemühen.
Mit dem Auto reisen wir schließlich an und lassen es an der Talstation der Seilbahn stehen. Aber wir nehmen nicht die Seilbahn. Da wir einen ganzen Tag vor uns haben, und uns die Seilbahn höchstens eine Stunde Aufstieg erspart, entscheiden wir uns für die Wanderung von Anfang an.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The trail starts across the street from the parking lot and is well marked. The terrain is quite a bit rough, and there are steep sections as well as sections that are easy walking. At times we’re required to climb over more exposed rocks. After a good hour, we reach the level where the top station of the cable car is located, and take a little break here.

Der Pfad geht gleich gegenüber vom Parkplatz los und ist gut gekennzeichnet. Das Gelände ist ein bisschen rau. Es gibt sehr steile Abschnitte, und dann wieder Abschnitte, in denen man gut vorankommt. Manchmal ist der Weg auch etwas exponiert und erfordert kleine Kletterpartien über felsiges Gestein. Nach einer guten Stunde erreichen wir die Höhe der Bergstation der Seilbahn, wo wir eine kleine Pause einlegen.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Here, at lake level, and with connections to the cable car, it’s a bit busy as anyone can get here with little effort. The road is well built und goes around the entire like. But we are headed for the Totalp Cabin, so we soon leave the main road and follow the little hiking trail that will take us to the cabin in about an hour. The trail is quite steep in some places, but for the most part doesn’t offer any particular challenges.

Hier, auf Höhe des Sees und mit Seilbahnanbindung, sind noch viele Leute unterwegs. Der Weg ist gut ausgebaut und führt um den See herum.
Wir haben es aber auf die Totalphütte abgesehen, und schlagen bald wieder den kleinen Wanderpfad ein, der uns in einstündigem Aufmarsch zur Hütte hinaufbringt. 
Bis zur Hütte, ist der Weg zwar mancherorts steil, aber meist gut begehbar ohne nennenswerte Herausforderungen.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Upon arrival at the cabin, we register, are allowed to claim our beds, and take time for lunch. The day is still early, and there are a number of short hiking trails in the vicinity of the cabin, so we spend the remainder of the afternoon exploring. Not all trails are easy hiking and in some places keeping our footing requires our best efforts. 

Bei Ankunft auf der Hütte melden wir uns an, und dürfen schon mal unsere Betten belegen. Wir nehmen uns außerdem die Zeit für ein Mittagessen. Der Tag ist noch jung und es gibt ein paar Wanderpfade um die Hütte, und so verbringen wir den Nachmittag mit Auskundschaften der Umgebung. Manche Abschnitte sind nicht gerade leichtes Wandern, und man braucht hier oben schon eine gewisse Trittsicherheit.
