Awakenings | Aufbrüche

It’s been so many years since I’ve spent a spring in Germany – more than a decade. For this reason, I take every day as a gift. Watching nature awakening, I realize very well that it may take another decade yet again, before I get to enjoy this again. Es ist schon so viele Jahre her, seit ich den letzten Frühling in Deutschland erlebt habe – über ein Jahrzehnt. Aus diesem Grund nehme ich jeden Tag als ein Geschenk war. Zeuge davon zu werden, wie die Natur erwacht, da erkenne ich sehr wohl, dass es vielleicht erst wieder in einem Jahrzehnt sein wird, wenn ich dies das nächste Mal erleben werde.

Arrived | Angekommen

I’m back in Germany, and I’m still trying to make sense of all that happened in the last few days. After being picked up by my parents at the FRA airport, we have chosen voluntarily to go into quarantine. I’m still teaching online, so I’m busy with my classes. But the same week that I arrived in GER all flights around the world are grounded. And I realize I literally caught one of the last flights that was still going. Ich bin zurück in Deutschland und versuche immer noch irgendwie all das zu verstehen, was in den letzten Tagen auf mich eingestürmt ist. Nachdem meine Eltern mich am Flughafen in FRA abgeholt haben, gehen wir freiwillig in Quarantäne. Ich unterrichte auch noch Online, so habe ich mit dem Unterricht alle Hände voll zu tun. Aber noch in derselben Woche, in der ich in DEU angekommen bin, werden alle Flüge ausgesetzt und ich stelle fast, dass ich fast buchstäblich mit einem der letzten Flüge herausgekommen bin. …

The Flight | Die Flucht

Sudden developments have led to drastic changes for me. Plötzliche Entwicklungen haben zu einschneidenden Veränderungen für mich geführt. The News | Die Nachricht Friday, my boss asked me for a conference. In that conference he informed me that he is expecting the lockdown to last for a while and that students most likely won’t return to campus until April/May, most likely not at all. I’ve been asking him about my options to return to GER this semester, if no students are around anyway, and for the first time, he recommended I should try leaving the country. He informed me that the risks are great for me to have trouble returning as my residence permit will expire and I will have to apply for a new visa. Am Freitag hat mein Vorgesetzter um eine Unterredung mit mir gebeten. In diesem Gespräch informierte er mich, dass er damit rechnet, dass der Lockdown anhalten wird, und er nicht mit einer schnellen Rückkehr der Studenten rechnet. A Tiny Bit of Freedom | Ein kleines bisschen Freiheit

We’ve gotten big news! After weeks of being locked in on campus, we’ve been given permission to go shopping into town. Being allowed to leave campus comes with many rules: We have to register to go; a van will take us directly from school to one supermarket. We have one hour to shop, then it’s back to campus. But can you imagine the sense of freedom we feel as we are herded, for the first time in over a month, into the van? Of course, coming back we get our temperates measured several times (as if you can catch a fever within the one hour that we’re out), but hey – if that’s the price for freedom, we pay it gladly! Es gibt große Neuigkeiten! Nachdem wir seit Wochen den Campus nicht verlassen durften, haben wir die Erlaubnis bekommen, in die Stadt zum Einkaufen zu gehen. Den Campus verlassen zu dürfen heißt zwar, es gibt einiges an Regeln zu befolgen. So müssen wir uns zunächst registrieren. Ein Kleinbus wird uns dann direkt vom Campus zum …
