To the End of the World

When I got up this morning, I didn’t know that only a few hours later my journey would take me to the end of the world. Or at least to the end of the Schlei fjord, which is pretty much the end of the world as far as I see it. But sometimes the places where you least expect it, turn out to be the prettiest places. And so today – I must add – turned out to be the unexpected highlight of our family vacation at the Baltic Sea. The plan had been to get dad to the historic train station, where he and my sister wanted to embark on a special train ride, while mom and I wanted to go to town with them, sit in a cafe, read a book, and wait for them to return. But plans don’t always work the way we anticipate them. Sometimes they change. For the better, that is! Things changed for me, when I realized – as soon as I got out of the car – that …

Building Castles

What’s a beach holiday without a real sand castle? Nothing, really – you’re right! We’re thinking the same. And so today, we set out to turn this vacation into the real deal, full-blown, sand-castle-building beach holiday! After lunch, we armed ourselves with a little shovel, some plastic cups, and a good deal of excitement, and thus, we began to build ourselves a castle. It turned out not quite the prettiest of all sand castles which have ever been built, but on our little strip of sand it certainly was one of the largest around.

Beach Play

After work, we had more time to play at the beach. And after dinner today, we actually tried our hands at flying a kite. Wasn’t quite successful, and I would’ve liked to blame the wind for that. But, next to us a boy had a kite up in the air, which did a fine job at staying there, so I’m afraid it wasn’t quite the wind’s fault. Must’ve been the kite’s fault then, of course. Because what else could have been the reason for that thing always trying to come after us, and never wanting to be a dutiful kite which knows exactly what to do when let loose in the wind?

Beach Discoveries

Do the photos look like the weather’s been a blast the last couple of days? Well, truth be told, weather conditions have been rather unsettled these days. Lots of sunshine, but lots of rain, too. Fortunately, I’m working on assignments most of the time, and when I finally get to leave books, notes, and the internet behind, the sun is out again, and I can venture to the beach without worrying about how to escape the water that comes from above. Here’s the discoveries I made today …

Marine Studies

I’ve been working hard these days. Because assignments never ask whether you’re on vacation when their due date is calling. But the good news is: as soon as I close my “books” (that is my (computer) “notebook,”) I find myself surrounded by beach, sand, ocean, and wind, and that means, I’m ready to take off on a new tour of discoveries. Today, this is what I got to study out of doors …

Treasures from the Sea

I got to collect treasures today. Treasured memories that is. Memories from playing at the beach, from walking the nature trail, from exploring the cliffs, and from checking out the other pretty beaches which are within bike riding distance from our location. There’s no better place for a retreat than a stretch of sand right by the seaside.

Stories from the Alps: The Art of Milking Cows

Our hike continued today, and it continued with several encounters of the special kind: cows. Ever since our last trip to Switzerland, my friend and Canadian squirrel imitator had set his mind on wanting to milk a Swiss cow, of which you usually can find plenty in the Alps. (Prior to our tour he even researched on youtube how to do that!) And today, the opportunity finally presented itself. Twice, in fact. The first time, however, my friend got sidetracked and went down exploring a riverbed, leaving me to watch our backpacks. So I used the opportunity to take some pictures. But when I turned around to get a snack from my backpack, I suddenly found myself face to face with big ol’ Miss cow-face. ‘No big deal,’ I thought, ‘as long as she keeps her snotty nose out of my stuff …’ But that wasn’t the intention of Miss snotty cow-face, because as soon as I started chewing on my cracker, she set her mind on chewing just the same – leaving me to …

Stories from the Alps: Of Alpine Puddle Drinks and Other Adventures

Mürren – Gspaltenhornhütte; almost there We hiked today. High into the mountain world of the Swiss alps. A long hike, with lots to discover. Like alpine flowers, ibexes, little pools of icy water, and snow, of course. Lots of snow. Now, if you ask me what all of this has to do with alpine puddle drinks – I can tell you: Nothing, really! Just my dear hiking buddy, the oversized Canadian squirrel (see this post here), tried to convince me that tasting alpine puddle drinks would work miracles in quenching my thirst. Ya, right! Anyways, here’s a look at our tour: The Tour | Day 1: We start out in Interlaken and take the train to Lauterbrunnen. From Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp we take the cable car, and then another train up to Mürren. (By the way, trains and cable car are connected with each other, so that we don’t lose any time switching transportation or figuring out where to go.) Within a few minutes’ walk from the train station, we are surrounded by alpine pastures. …
