Saturday Feature: Christmas Presents

Christmas is just behind us and as I was packing up all my Christmas decorations today, I thought I’d share with you the Christmas presents I got over the last couple of weeks. It usually turns out quite the interesting selection of gifts – some of which are rather useful, others …, well, you decide … Included in the list of things I got were: 1 stuffed animal 1 plush photo album 1 set of coasters (decorated with traditional Chinese art) 5 apples 2 calendars 1 bowl of American, home-made cookies & sweet treats (yum!) peanut cake 1 box of tea + soap & natural sponge 1 pair of mittens + 1 food container + 1 pencil case

Saturday Feature: The School’s Christmas Tree

Let me tell you about the school’s Christmas tree. It was set up in the main shopping square of campus about a week ago, and the decision as to whether it’s a pretty sight to be seen or not, I’ll leave up to you. However, what’s most interesting about this Christmas tree is it’s decoration. At the time it is being set up it usually doesn’t have any decoration, but this usually changes very soon afterward as students start flocking around the tree and hang little cards and papers with wishes on the tree. Not quite the traditional Christmas tree decoration, but the same thing happens every year. So, instead of the Christmas tree, it becomes a “Wishing tree”! And if you look very closely, you might even catch a glimpse of Santa Clause! Merry Christmas then y’all!

Saturday Feature: Christmas Tree

For some it is the cause for great excitement, for others it is a reason to turn their noses up and look at it in disdain: this year’s foreign faculty Christmas tree. True, it’s the first ever real Christmas tree we had in the lobby of the teacher’s flat, but for a real tree it’s a rather poor sampling. And even whether the way it is decorated is beautiful or not is open to dispute. After all, people’s tastes are different. As for me, I’ve come to the conclusion that even though the tree as a whole is a somewhat pitiful sight to be seen, this year’s decoration is a lot better than in past years, though I would have preferred the fake tree!

Saturday Feature: My Little Christmas Tree

It all started a couple of years ago: I won one of four Christmas trees the International Housing Department of our school distributes every year through a raffle. Before that I had never even thought of getting a Christmas tree. Now that I had one for the season (we would have to return them after Christmas so they could be used again the following year), I realized I was in need of some decoration. So I went to the city in search for some nice ornaments. Now, those of you who don’t live in China need to know that there’s only one kind of Christmas decoration available here: the sparkly, glittery kind (not exactly my style). However, a Christmas tree without ornaments is an even sadder thing to behold. So I just bought what I found in the spur of the moment. Well, the following year, I decided to be a little more organized. Not wanting to depend on a raffle again, I got my own tree, plus a box full of ornaments. And this …

Saturday Feature: Advent Wreath

Last Saturday I already introduced you to my new advent wreath. So, after it’s been set up and in use for a week now, I thought I’d tell you what happened whenever people saw it. Usually there are several responses, and in the last week I could see them repeated over and over each time I had visitors (and usually I have students and friends visit me every single day). #1 Response: Big “Ahs” and “Ohs” upon entering my living room and seeing the advent wreath (and all the other Christmas decorations). #2 Response: Sitting down/walking around it and admiring it from all different angles. #3 Response: Asking questions about it and its purpose/meaning. #4 Response: Taking it apart – lifting up the candles to be able to admire them better; closely examining each single piece of decoration (pine cones, bows, boxes, twigs, etc. – looks like most of them have never even seen a pine cone!). Can you tell an advent wreath is quite a curious thing around here? No one has ever heard …

Monday Highlight (11/29)

The end of November is quickly approaching, the Christmas season has already started, but I want to highlight a very non-Christmas themed digi-kit today: “Reach for the Sky.” (Will try to show you some more Christmas products and layouts in the weeks to come, so check back in for that.) Reach for the Sky by Kristin Chronin-Barrow This kit has a beautiful color palette of blues and browns, mixed with some pops of green and red, and though it seems to be made for more masculine layouts (color scheme wise), the flowers included will also work for beautiful feminine pages , which makes this kit quite versatile. Kristin also created some unique embellishments (kites, air balloons, and a fun pennant element) that look adorable on any page. Check out what I did using “Reach for the Sky”: I’ve recently gotten these great pictures that I h-a-v-e to scrap with, and though the pictures are all beach themed, I had to use Kristin’s kit with them and love how this page turned out. Admittedly, it’s basically …

In the Spotlight (11/28)

I’m so excited to highlight “Happy Holidays” by Kjersti in this week’s “spotlight”. I saw it on the Sweetshoppe blog earlier last week and immediately knew it was going to make today’s post here in the Digi-Scrap Corner. I especially love the cluster behind the photo on this page – all the different elements arranged with the evergreens – so beautiful! The big title is so fun, and have you seen the button/bow combination which she used to “fix” the date tag? Adorable!

Saturday Feature: My First Advent Wreath

Christmas is fast approaching. Tomorrow is the first Sunday of Advent already, and this year I have my own very first: My first real advent wreath in China. Well, not a wreath, really. But it is this advent thingy that can hold four candles, so it counts as advent wreath, I guess. In the last couple of years, I always just arranged some candles with some simple Christmas decoration on my coffee table, but this year it’s the real deal! My mom brought it from Germany where she had bought it at the end of last year’s Christmas season at my request. (Yep, did I ever mention that you learn to become very patient here in China?) Well, anyway, I finally have one. And since I had no candles to go with it, this morning’s main project was to hop on the shopping bus to the city and find some (there are no real candles anywhere here in town; Chinese people don’t usually use candles.) However, finding them isn’t actually the challenge, since I had …

Check it out: Monday Highlight 11/22

As you might have realized, I have two separate blogs running on my website: 1. One about life in China, 2. the second is all about digital scrapbooking. Generally, I’ll keep these two blogs apart from each other, so that those not interested in scrapbooking won’t have to deal with it when visiting my general blog and vice versa. However, since there is a lot going on at the Digi-Scrap Corner, I’ve decided that once a week, on Mondays, I’ll post my scrapbook contribution in the general blog as well, just to allow my general readers a peek into the digiscrap world. So, come on over and check out my first ever Monday Highlight, featuring “Wonderful” by Melissa Bennett and my layouts “Forbidden City” & “Facing Time”.
