Saturday Feature: Weather Escapades

It’s hard to believe that exactly one week ago it was snowing, whereas today, many of us were out to get a tan! This years spring weather has been quite an escapade: cold one day, summery hot the next. Overall, though, it has been on the rather chilly side of things, lately, and without the heat, some of us have been quite freezing in our homes. All the more, do we enjoy days like this when it’s warm and summery outside. And we are not the only ones. Everywhere students ventured outside, sat on the various grass patches around campus, played sports, or like in the image above: practiced for the upcoming sports day.

Around Town: Campus Garden

In the ever increasing hustle and bustle of our growing campus, the campus garden is yet one place to find quiet and relaxation from a very busy day. It’s located in the heart of our campus – an oasis with benches that invite passersby to sit down and rest, to enjoy nature, and maybe take your assignments with you and enjoy some extra fresh air, while doing your work. The garden is maybe one of my most favorite places on campus.

Tomb Sweeping Holiday

It’s a holiday here in China, and that means no classes today and tomorrow – as the school officially closes for a short vacation. Of course, students (and teachers alike) had to go to class on Saturday to make up for today’s classes, but at least that gives everyone three days in a row without school. The traditional Tomb Sweeping Day (where a large proportion of Chinese worships their ancestors) will take place tomorrow, and it usually is a pretty big deal locally, since our town is considered one of the cradles of Chinese civilization.

Saturday Feature: Soccer Tournament

Every year, the soccer tournament between the different departments of our university takes place in March. Some members of the foreign faculty also take part in the matches, together with a group of Chinese teachers. Yesterday was the final. And even though it kind of is to be expected that the PE department wins every year, for the last couple of years, the teacher’s team won the trophy. This year, however, fighting not only against the other team, but also against a dust storm that made playing almost impossible, the PE students had the upper hand, and finally won the tournament. For us by-standers, however, being exposed to all the gusts of wind and dust, we were almost as much in need of a shower after watching the game as the players themselves!

Around Town: Campus 2

You may remember that a little more than a month ago, I posted a photo of one of the main roads of our campus during the winter holiday: it was completely deserted. That prospect now, however, has completely vanished. Ever since school started again about two weeks ago, our campus as been buzzing with students wherever you turn. The photo you can see here shows our main shopping road at a time when it actually wasn’t busy at all. This place often can get a lot more crowded!

Around Town: Campus

This is what our campus looks like during the winter holiday, when students are gone: Empty! During the semester you’ll never find the campus anywhere near as deserted as this, as there are crowds of students everywhere (pretty much at any given time). And I must confess, though I miss the interaction with the students, I really do enjoy our campus being this quiet and solitary. It’s a rare occasion and therefore must be savored, especially since the number of students grows every year!
