And Let the Season Begin … Every year again … it’s that time again: The most glamorous of all seasons. At least judging by my cozy little home. At no other times the lights twinkle and glitter more beautifully than at Christmas. It’s the time of Christmas cookies and treats, of hot cocoas and yes, a home that is far too warm, because around here wee don’t have control over our heaters. Then the only thing wee can do is, wear light clothes, and forget that outside winter has everything in its grip already.   Und so beginnt die Weihnachtszeit … Alle Jahre wieder … ist es mal wieder so weit: Die glanzvollste Zeit des Jahres beginnt. Zumindest, wenn man nach meinen heimeligen vier Wänden urteilt. Zu keiner anderen Zeit des Jahres glitzern und funkeln die Lichter so herrlich, wie zur schönen Weihnachtszeit. Es ist die Zeit der Weihnachtsplätzchen, heißen Schokoladen, und ja, einem Zuhause, das viele zu warm ist. Denn wir haben ja keine Kontrolle über unsere Heizungen. Von durstigen Straßen und dergleichen I noticed a while ago: Around here not only the flowers get watered. In fact, our streets seem to be much more needy. At least when you judge by the amount of water they get every day. Daily, the water truck will come by multiple times to water thee streets. First, only the public streets outside of campus, but since this semester thee streets on campus also get watered on a daily basis. I don’t mind, as long as I don’t get caught in the drizzle, which unfortunately happens more often than I like. Thee only comfort I have then is not to wonder where thee water comes from … Schon seit einiger Zeit habe ich bemerkt: Bei uns werden nicht nur die Blumen regelmäßig gegossen. Tatsächlich scheinen unsere Straßen viel bedürftiger als die Pflanzenwelt zu sein. Zumindest wenn man danach urteilt, wie oft sie jeden Tag “gegossen” werden. Autumn has finally arrived here as well. It’s lovely, walking around campus and seeing all the colors. It only lasts a short while, so we’re making the most of it. Der Herbst ist endlich auch hier bei uns angekommen. Es macht Freude über den Campus zu laufen, und die vielen Farben zu genießen. Lange wird es ja nicht anhalten.

Day 2 of our hike begins with the most glorious sunrise which I watch from the window of my dorm. After a regular breakfast we set out. This hike is a bit more demanding. Some parts of the trail are a bit more exposed, and it’s definitely not the kind of hike for the untrained person. Being able to handle heights is just as useful as being steady footed. Tag 2 unserer Wanderung beginnt mit dem herrlichsten Sonnenaufgang, den ich vom Fenster meiner Unterkunft erleben darf.Nach einem regulären Frühstück geht’s bald darauf los. Eine anstrengende Wanderung liegt vor uns mit einigen exponierten Stellen. Diese Route ist nichts für den ungeübten Wanderer. Schwindelfreiheit sind genauso hilfreich wie Trittsicherheit.                                 Walking right past the border to Switzerland, we eventually make it to the summit of Schesaplana. Totalp Hike – Day 1 | Totalp Wanderung – Tag 1

I’m back in the mountains. This time brother-in-law, nephew, and buddy are my hiking companions. We decided to check out the Austrian Alps, though we’re not far from the German border, and the Swiss border will be just the reach of an arm away as you will see.Our destination today will be the Totalp Cabin where we’ve booked lodging to stay overnight. (The Alps can be busy this time of year, and it pays off to book well in advance.)We get there by car, which we park at the valley station of the cable car.But we don’t take the cable car. As we have the entire day ahead of us, and taking the cable car will only save us an hour or so, we take to the trails right from the start. Ich bin zurück in den Bergen.
