Behind the Scenes: 4+ Ways of Scrapping Double Page Spreads

When it comes to scrapping pages for photo albums and such, my preferred way of scrapping the memories is by using double page spreads.

Of course, as with everything you do in scrapping, there are lots of choices as to how to go about your designs. When working with double page spreads, I’ve found there are four ways of how you can scrap them:

  1. One combined layout, using a composition that includes your entire spread.
  2. A two-page layout, using the same products.
  3. Using two pages with different products to scrap about the same topic.
  4. Two single page layouts with different products and different topics.

Option 1 | A Combined Layout

This option means you would create a two-page spread like a single unit. Personally, it is my preferred choice to scrap two page spreads for an album, because it makes the two pages look like one large layout.

Option 2 | Two-page Layout with Same Product

Another favorite option of mine is to create two separate layouts for a double page, but to use the same product to give it continuity and balance.

Option 3 | Two-Page Layout with Different Products but Same Topic

The third option I’ve explored a bit in the past is to scrap a double page spread using different products to create single pages, but to scrap about a related topic.

Tip:
Use a common color scheme or themed products to ensure continuity.

Option 4 | Two Single Pages

The last option I’ve used for photo books is to simply scrap away, without giving much thought to whether the pages are related or coordinated.

More tips:

1. Use a template twice by flipping/mirroring it to make a fun double page layout.

2. Combine two single page templates to make one double page layout

So, you see, with just these couple of tips your choices to create fun and exciting double page spreads for albums are endless.

Journaling Café: Eating Habits

Food. It’s such an important part of our lives. And yet, we give so little attention to it when it comes to our journaling. Today, however, we’ll reserve a little spot just for that – our eating habits:

Kiddo Play Time

I went to play the other day. Not by myself. But with a bunch of kids we went to visit in one of the orphanages nearby. And we had a good time together, although it was a little too short. There’s so much joy in watching a child have fun and enjoying him or herself, even if it is just with a simple dance, or a game of basketball.

P2D: Me

I love the inspiration I can get from real paper scrappers. Here’s another page that inspired me:

In order to create the little frames, I used my tablet to draw them, and the rest was simply to fill them with the goodies that came with the scrapbooking kit.

Bake Sale No. XY

130316-IMG_7517We love bake sales. Simply because they give us the pleasure of enjoying some of the comforts we’ve known from home. And tonight, it was one of these days again – one of these, rare, wonderful, and yummy occasions to join a long line of fellow teachers (and students) who are willing to indulge themselves for the sole purpose of supporting orphans in the area (which is the reason why these bake sales are organized in the first place). And what a wonderful reason it is to get a couple of extra sweet treats when you know it’s all for a good purpose and not really only to spoil yourself and put on a couple of extra pounds …

Light My Way

130314-Photo-Mar-14,-17-31-10You may remember the issues we’re having with the lights. (I talked about it some time last year.) Well, that same issue continues. And you know that there’s an issue the moment you step into our hallway. Why? Because at times you have to feel your way to our doors. Because the light bulbs love to quit their jobs just as frequently as is the case with the light bulbs we have in our apartments. These days, we’re still lucky, though. Because – as you can see – there’s still enough light to give you at least an idea of where you’re going. As that’s not always the case, I consider myself lucky these days.

Quite the Scare

I’m not against technological advancements. Not at all. But I’m also not someone who needs to ride the waves of every technological advancement there is. Hence,  I was used to the fact that everyone loved to make fun of my cell phone, because it was so old and in such poor condition. But I didn’t mind. Seeing how I was used to do anything but calling others and sending messages with my phone, I never saw the need to get a new one, let alone a smart phone.

Last year, however, I decided to take a big step and go smart phone. And quickly I began to wonder how I had ever managed with my simple shabby old cell phone. Even just a couple of days ago, I talked to a family member about how thankful I am for the phone I have now since I use it for all sorts of things, not just phoning and messaging.

But then something happened the other day. Something dreadful. Something that gave me quite the scare!

It was the day when I was getting ready for class. The day when I needed to leave home early in the morning. The day when I was pulling on my warmer pants (so as to not freeze in my classroom). The day when before pulling on my pants I still thought, “Should I take the phone out of the pocket of my pants, just in case? Naaah! I’ll remember to be careful.” But that was the day when within seconds I forgot the cell phone in the pocket. The day when I – yes – dropped the phone.

You see, one of the big reasons for why I never wanted to invest into something like a smart phone was my fear of dropping it. Or losing it. Of course, I never really dropped any of my old cell phones or lost them, so that’s not really a tendency I have, which is why I finally decided to invest into a nicer phone.

But that morning, the morning when I needed to go to class early, the morning when I pulled on my pants with the phone in its pocket, I did just that: I dropped the phone. Of course, it only fell onto a pile of laundry, so when I hurried to pick it up, heart thumping and all, I didn’t really expect it to be broken or anything. But when I pressed the button to make sure it was still working, I quickly realized: it didn’t! It was dead. Dead as in: the screen stays black, no buttons work, no response at all. Dead!

Of course, being on my way out, I didn’t have time to check things, so I left for class feeling awful all morning. Did I really manage to wreck my “new” phone within months, after I had never done anything bad with my old phones? After the only thing it had done was: falling out of a pocket and onto a laundry pile? (Just the other day one of my friends had dropped her phone – same as mine – and nothing was wrong with it at all, and her phone didn’t even fall onto a laundry pile, but just on the plain hard floor.)

When I got home after lunch, the first thing I did was trying again to turn on the phone. Still: Nothing!

With a horrible feeling, I went to check online, searching for options to turn on your phone etc. And there it was. A very simple solution. Press Hold and Home buttons at the same time. I had never thought of that. And I had to use a little patience. I had to keep those two buttons pressed for quite a while. But there it was: a little flicker, and then the welcome logo of a half eaten apple appeared, and my poor little heart went soaring.

After all, it was just a big scare. Nothing more. Phone works fine, heart is happy, and we’re living happily ever after!
