So, the deal is that every week the school is supposed to provide transportation into the nearby big city, so our colleagues can do shopping, or just get out of town. But the stipulation has been: We need at least 10 people in order for said transportation to be provided. The problem: Due to the covid situation, the number of the foreign faculty is down so far, there are never enough teachers to go. I’ve been trying for weeks to get to Ikea, because I wanted to get my hand on some of their gingerbread houses – while the season lasts. But every week it was the same story: the shopping trip is canceled.

But finally, the office took heart and promised: there will be a trip, no matter how many sign up. And here we went. Funny, all of us that went had Ikea as their destination, so we made a group trip there. And I was happy to check out their Christmas section, and more happy simply because I got what I came for, and more of that: gingerbread houses – one large one, and a pack of six smaller ones.

I prefer the Ikea ones over homemade, because they really make my home smell Christmassy – far more than my own ones ever do. And they’re cute, too. The only thing I had to pay careful attention to: many of them were already broken in their packages in the store. So, I had to go through scores of packages to find the one that had no broken pieces. And it told me: treat the package with much care as you make your way home.

Also, die Abmachung ist, dass die Schule jeden Samstag Transport in die naheliegende Großstadt für die Kollegen organisiert – damit man shoppen gehen kann, oder einfach mal rauskommen. Aber die Abmachung sagt auch, dass zumindest 10 Leute gehen müssen, wenn die Schule den Transport organisiert. Das Problem: Aufgrund der Covidlage sind die Zahlen der Kollegen so stark nach unten gegangen, es finden sich eigentlich nie genug Leute, dass die Schule die Fahrt organisiert. Seit Wochen habe ich nun schon versucht, mit dem Schultransport in die Stadt zu kommen. Ziel: Ikea. Denn ich möchte mich dort in der Weihnachtsabteilung umschauen. Und vor allem möchte ich deren Lebkuchenhäuschen ergattern. Aber jede Woche heißt es: Die Shopping Fahrt ist gecancelt.

Aber endlich hat sich das Büro erbarmt und versprochen: Es wird eine Fahrt geben, egal wieviele sich eintragen. Und so ging es endlich los. Lustigerweise hatten alle von uns dasselbe Ziel: Ikea! Darum gingen wir dann als Gruppe. Und ich konnte mich nach Herzenslust in der Weihnachtsabteilung umschauen, und bekam auch was ich wollte (und mehr davon): Lebkuchenhäuser – ein großes, und sechs kleine.

Ich mag die Ikeahäuschen, denn sie duften so herrlich nach Weihnachten und füllen meine Wohnung mit dem Aroma. Meine selbstgebackenen duften nie so herrlich. Die einzige Sache war: eine Packung zu finden, in der es nicht schon zerbrochene Teile gab. Ich habe mich durch Berge von Verpackungen gearbeitet, bis ich das Richtige fand. Und dann war ich auch gleich für die Heimreise vorgewarnt: Die Packungen müssen mit größter Sorgfalt behandelt werden.
