One Year Ago

Today, exactly one year ago, I woke up to this! It had started to snow the day before, and in hopes of getting some pictures of the snow before all the students would play with it and mess up the peaceful scenery, I got up extra early to go for a walk on campus. Hardly ever do we get snow like this, and just as I had expected: only hours later the beauty of an untouched winter wonderland had faded, as thousands of students enjoyed some extra fun in the snow. One interesting observation I could make on that snowy day, last year: though all the students live within walking distance of their classrooms, still, no one thought of leaving their dorms earlier to make sure they’d be on time for class. After all, walking on slippery snow and ice takes longer than usual. But nobody seemed to bother that everyone was late, even though – with just a little bit of careful planning – everybody could have made it on time! Waking up this …

All My M&Ms

You may remember that last week during Culture Week, I organized a game for which I filled up a water bottle with M&Ms, and had students guess how many were inside. The winner got to keep the bottle with the M&Ms. Not knowing how many exactly of the M&Ms would fit into the bottle I bought more than we needed and we couldn’t use them in our other games, so this week I got to have a little extra treat of M&Ms.  Funny thing is – even though every supermarket around here sells these little colorful chocolate pieces, most students didn’t even know what they are. It was a surprise to them that you could eat this stuff and that it’s chocolate. Even the winner of the contest had to ask me (when I handed over the prize) what exactly was in the bottle! I’m sure they enjoyed their chocolate treat just as much as I am enjoying mine now!

Places to Go: WuLing Mountain

For everyone who likes traveling in China, there is a nice place about 100 km north of Beijing. Beautiful mountains, lakes, gorgeous scenery and sections of the Great Wall right in the vicinity. We stayed in the WuLingShan Mountain Villa, right near a lake, and our rooms offered a great view of the surrounding scenery. Surrounded by mountains, there are many opportunities for climbing/hiking and other outdoor activities. The area shows very little signs of pollution and it’s a perfect get-away for anyone who enjoys nature and the outdoors.

BOTCT – 3rd place

The final results of the “Battle of the Creative Teams” are in and our team made the 3rd place! The creative teams of over 40 digiscrap Designers took part in this competition, so I feel quite honored to be ranked so high with Libby’s team. Thanks to a great team and a great experience!

Settling it

Taught my students how to play Settlers this afternoon and it made me feel good that I didn’t win this round ;-). None of them has ever played any board game like that and to them “playing games” is kids-stuff, until they realize that there are actually games that grown-ups enjoy just as much! Yay for my favorite ever board game!

Moments I Treasure

It’s DSD, and of course I had to do some digiscrapping, since I have done very little recently.
